Officially diagnosed with a chronic eye disease at 25, I spent the next 2 years searching for an opthamologist or other eye care specialist that could help.
Time and time again, I was met with misleading, outdated and often blatantly incorrect information.
I was given a vast array of scenarios ranging from certain blindness within 3 months to a high probability of never having my central vision compromised and so much in between.
I spent thousands and got absolutely nowhere.
Almost 4 years have passed since my diagnosis.
My vision has deteriorated to appoint I can no longer work in my trained professin.
I am a centrelink recipient on a blind pension, I am a worker by nature. This has not just taken away from my pocket but from my character and my identity.
The Australian Government will help me in blindness, they will provide with a guide dog ($40,000 - $60,000), pay me a disability pension for the next 35yrs and provide me with government funded carers, equipment and technology, people paid to update my awareness and ability with new technologies...
Once blind, the handouts seem never ending.
But I don't want a handout. I need a hand.
I have been accepted into the treatment program at Beijing Internationalo Hospital and am now in a race against the clock to save my sight before it is too late.
The cost of the treatment to save my sight is in total less than the cost to train a guide dog, less than what most people pay for a new car, it is only marginally more than what the disability pension pays ine ONE year.
I am from rural NSW and am witnessing first hand the effect of drought, every day I hear more bad news about the fires burning around our country.
I know we are all on struggle street.
