Help me earn my Doctorate in Learning Technologies
Hello Friends, Family, Alum and Kind Strangers,
If you know me, you know that I am a dedicated educator who spent a decade in inner city schools located in South Central and Downtown Los Angeles. I was the teacher who stayed until midnight, who wrote dozens of letters of recommendation, begged on the phone with college admissions officers and taught through my vacation breaks so that my students could have a chance at passing the AP exam. (Kids, remember that?)
Currently, I am an Education Manager at the Annenberg Presidential Learning Center and work tirelessly to create engaged and conscientious citizens. I am also pursuing a Doctoral Degree in Learning Technologies at Pepperdine University. My topic of research revolves around how to leverage social media and democratized knowledge into increased civic participation. After my time in at risk schools, I truly believe that civic learning is the social justice issue of our time. After all, if students are unable to advocate for themselves, how can they voice their needs for better schools, more options and a fair shot in life?
This spring in course EDLT 760, we are required to take an international trip to China that focuses on the world outside the US with regard to technology in everyday life and in work, school, and informal learning. Being fiscally responsible, I have saved money for the program, earned a few scholarships and taken out student loans. However, the additional cost of travel of the Learning Technologies program has been tough to cover.
I will be taking the course in April and am asking for help. I have always believed Muhammad Ali's assertion that "service to others is the rent you pay for room here on this earth". Helping me complete this program is empowering me with different tools to create social change. Thank you!
