Emmanuel the Nurse
Hello Amazing Friends and Family,
As you know I have spent the past few summers volunteering
and living in East Africa. One of the most fulfilling and enjoyable aspects of
these trips were the people and friends that I made along the way. Emmanuel
Abere is one of these amazing friends, and someone who has touched my life and
the lives of many others in truly brilliant ways. Emmnauel was the first person
that I met in Kenya, and a major source of strength for me during my time
there.
Emmanuel is a youth volunteer worker from North Maragoli in
Western Kenya. For the past many years Emmanuel has dedicated a HUGE, and I
mean HUGE amount of time to volunteering with numerous organizations to improve
the livelihoods of those within his community. I have had the pleasure of
working alongside him on the reconstruction of a youth polytechnic school, a
bridge connecting two major towns and on the construction of one of the only
schools in the region for children with physical disabilities. Emmanuel has
also been a dedicated volunteer with this school, donating his time (the
equivalent of a full time job) to manage construction of the school, teach
classes and assist children by coordinating trips to medical centers for
various treatments. Emmanuel has never been compensated for this work, which
has meant that it can sometimes be difficult to find resources for things such
as higher education.
As someone who represents the values of humanity and
generosity, and as someone who has touched my life in such a dramatic way I
feel that it is now time to pass it forward. Emmanuel was recently accepted to
study nursing at Nairobi Hospital's Nursing College and is due to commence
classes in September. It has been his
dream to study medical sciences so that he can use these skills to assist
children with medical ailments in his own community. The only problem is that
it is difficult to fund this schooling, and thus I am reaching out for help to
try and raise enough funds to cover Emmanuel's first year at the College. I
know that more than anyone I know, Emmanuel will take these skills to make a
tangible difference in his community and this is why I am so passionate about
ensuring that he is able to attend in September.
Having reviewed the documents from Nairobi Medical College,
including detailed fee breakdown's I am trying to raise $3000 within the next
two weeks. This is a hefty goal but I know that we can make this happen. This
money will cover all of the costs associated with tuition, accommodation, food
and money transfer costs for the first full year of study.
Anything helps, and I would greatly, greatly appreciate this
assistance to help a dear friend reach a goal and realize a dream. Any bit
helps!
Asante Sana and extreme amounts of Love,
Josh Layton
