Jeanette Graser – Greatest Generation, WWII Munitions Riveter Needs Help

Living her life for others, our mother Jeanette now needs some help.

101 years old, Marian “Jeanette” Graser has lived a rich life, filled with love. Time and again, she always showed those around here that we were more important to her than she was to herself. When her husband, our father, passed away, she became even more committed to her children, her fellow churchgoers, and her friends than she had been previously, showing up any time someone was in need, offering whatever help she could muster. That was always her way: as one of the original founders of Brooklyn Center Baptist Church, she forged lifelong bonds within the Church, bonds that she cherished. There too, if there was ever something that needed doing, more than a few people can attest that Jeanette would show up, a smile on her face, ready to get to work.

Jeanette grew up during the Great Depression, and when World War II broke out during her young adulthood, she stepped up immediately, heading down to the munitions factory before the “Rosie the Riveter” ad campaign went mainstream. Her personal story appears in a Midwestern museum about the era, but what she did, she did for neither glory nor compensation. In her mind, there was nothing else to do. She saw that democracy was in peril, she asked, “How can I help?” and then she threw herself into her factory work.

After the war, Jeanette married the love of her life, and although they never earned a lot of money, they were careful with the money that they did earn, providing well for their sons and their daughter. Knowing all of this, we cannot help but feel pained at what we are seeing happen today. Until a year and a half ago, when Jeanette was still living with her daughter, none of this seemed possible. Her daughter, however, is going through treatment for stage 4 breast cancer, and she is unable to care for our mother anymore. Her sons, at the same time, are all retired and living on fixed incomes, and the government has refused to provide Marian with the funding she needs to pay for her assisted living situation.

Marian, as you could guess, is frail at 101 years old. Her bills continue to pile up, she is blind and almost deaf, and there seems to be no relief available to her. Although we are disputing the government’s unfair, incorrect decision, we cannot wait for them to respond on their own time. If we do not act now, our beloved mother is going to become homeless.

One of the original Rosie the Riveters, one of the last of the Greatest Generation, Jeanette is in the moment of her most substantial need. She has given her life for all of us, working long hours first for her country and then for her family. We cannot let her down. She deserves better than this.

To help Jeanette and show her how much we appreciate the selfless life that she lived, make a contribution to this campaign today.

We appreciate your support.

Thank you!
