Beaver Lake's 100th Birthday! Tree Canopy Campaign

2024 marks the 100th birthday of Lakeview Park and Beaver Lake! We'd like to help celebrate by continuing to improve the park.

Two years ago, Lakeview Park Commission had a tree canopy campaign as part of a City of Asheville matching grant program to raise funds for new trees to be planted at Beaver Lake. This campaign raised enough funds for dozens of trees to be planted, adding vital tree canopy and wildlife habitat around the park.

The Lakeview Park Commission has again been awarded a matching grant from the City of Asheville for $5,000, with the same objectives of protecting and enhancing our existing tree canopy. The first phase of this plan included hiring Appalachian Land Stewards, a company that specializes in removal of invasive plants that affect tree health and viability. ALS completed this work along the perimeter trail around Beaver Lake, and the wooded areas in the Avon and Euclid Parkways.

The goal of this year's campaign is to raise $15,000 and be able to plant 20 trees, continuing our work preserving the tree canopy along the trail and throughout the park. We also want to plant native trees to replace invasive species that were removed earlier this spring and last fall.

Please consider making your donation to the Tree Canopy Campaign today. In addition to LVP/Beaver Lake's Centennial, Earth Day is April 22nd, and Arbor Day is April 26th. Our goal is to complete fundraising by the middle of April, and have the trees purchased and installed in late April.

A donation of $750 will purchase a 2" caliper native tree and includes transportation, installation and monitoring until established.

Appalachian Land Stewards will be sourcing and installing the trees, and the native species list they will be selecting from is:

River birch

Red bud

Flowering Dogwood

Sycamore

Willow Oak

Bald Cypress
