100 Words For Literacy Challenge

Donation protected
Reading is an activity many of us take for granted, but it is required in both your work and private life. 42% of Canadian Adults between the ages of 16  and 65 have low literacy skills. Less than 20% of people with the lowest literacy skills are employed. The Literacy Council of Durham Region (LCDR) is a volunteer organization dedicated to increasing adult literacy in Durham Region.

Sunday January 27th is Family Literacy Day. The LCDR is running an awareness/fundraising challenge which will culminate on Jan 27th. Beginning November 1st, participants will video themselves reading approximately 100 words from their favourite book in an attempt to get others interested in reading. The participant will then post this video on their Facebook page and tag 5 others to challenge them to read from their favourite book. In an attempt to raise money to support Adult Literacy Programs participants will also be encouraged to visit  our website  literacydurham.ca  or “The 100 Words For Literacy Challenge” GoFundMe page and help us reach our goal.

This Challenge will run for a total of 87 days with a goal of reaching 500 participants taking an opportunity to share a reading from their favourite book. The monies raised by this campaign will be used by the LCDR to recruit and train more volunteers as well as purchase support technology and materials to enhance our programs.
