Arteluta Capoeira's 10 Year Anniversary

Celebrating 10 years of bringing Brazilian arts and culture to the South Bay of Los Angeles!

This year marks our capoeira academy’s 10 year anniversary and 30 years of capoeira for our academy’s teacher and mentor, CM Varal. We are asking for your support to help us commemorate this milestone which will culminate at our 10th Festa de Batizado & Encontro de Capoeira taking place on the first weekend of November.

We’ve got big plans for this year, including taking some of our students to train capoeira in Brazil for the first time, and we are in the process of trying to bring a special guest teacher, Mestre Saracura, from Brazil for our event.

To help celebrate this landmark, we need to raise $3,000 before our event in November. Can you help?

In May 2010, with the encouragement of his students and mentors, Contra Mestre Varal opened ArteLuta Capoeira Academy in Lomita, CA – USA, together with me, his wife and student, Monica (Instructora Harmonia), with the mission of teaching, expanding and preserving the values, history, culture and legacy of the art of capoeira – bringing people together and changing lives along the way.

Varal grew up in a large, humble and close-knit family in Porto Alegre, RS – Brazil, where he began his capoeira training at the age of 11.  A group of students of Mestre Indio da Bahia started teaching capoeira classes in his neighborhood for kids, introducing Varal to the art form that would eventually influence his life, and develop into his own life philosophy and profession. As living proof, CM Varal believes that capoeira has the power to change lives in a positive way with its strong cultural history and values.

Arteluta Capoeira is a small but mighty family-owned cultural arts space that relies on the generosity of our students, friends, and community members to sustain our programming. Our students volunteer their time and talents when we have presentations and events, all for the love of capoeira. The annual Festa de Batizado & Encontro de Capoeira is both a celebration of them, as well as an opportunity for them to grow event more.

For the anniversary event, we plan to raise $8,000 in total to cover all of the special costs beyond our regular programming budget. These include the travel costs, stipends and housing for all of our invited guest master teachers coming from out of town. We will also have some minor space upgrades and repairs associated with our anniversary that we hope to cover as well. We have already received support from our students to cover a portion of this budget, and we are hopeful that our local capoeira community will support by participating in the event, but we need your help today to meet our goal.
