'Making Tinnitus Measurable' Research Project

The TinnitusFree Foundation is a fundraising institute that aims to optimize the search for the cause and a cure of tinnitus.
Tinnitus affects as much as 15% percent of the world population. 20% of those with this condition are severely disabled, that is 3% of the world population. One in 100 patients attempts suicide. Tinnitus greatly affects a person’s mental health and ability to work. The number of young people with tinnitus has doubled in recent years, mainly due to wearing in-ear buds and exposure to noise in nightlife, festivals and concerts.
The exact cause of tinnitus is still unknown, but we do know approximately what the triggers are. Scientific research on tinnitus is still in its infancy and is limited by the fact that there is no objective or measurable method of determining tinnitus: there are no blood or urine tests, no brain scans, no genetic tests that can confirm whether someone has tinnitus or not. As a result, someone with tinnitus often feels misunderstood: “if it is not measurable, it is not there”, or you will not be taken seriously as a patient. But it also complicates scientific research into finding the exact cause(s) and solution(s).
We want to change this by funding a groundbreaking research into objective measurement of tinnitus: a collaboration between Prof. dr. De Ridder, Prof. dr. Vanneste and Dr. Marco Congedo from the Universities of Otago, Texas, Dublin and Grenoble. They recently published in the leading journal "Nature Communications" that they can show with 88% certainty whether someone has tinnitus or not, based on an EEG, by means of artificial intelligence using two-dimensional machine learning.
To come to a true objective measure of tinnitus they will need to apply more advanced artificial intelligence (A.I.). This requires powerful computers and time from an A.I. specialist. The research will take between 2 and 3 years.
A successful outcome will make tinnitus measurable and therefore negotiable. It will cause an explosion in research for treatments, healthcare and it will encourage the medical industry to invest in a cure for tinnitus.

Een op de 100 patiënten doet een zelfmoordpoging. Het aantal jongeren met tinnitus is de afgelopen jaren verdubbeld, voornamelijk door het dragen van in-ear oordopjes en blootstelling aan lawaai in het nachtleven, festivals en concerten.
De exacte oorzaak van tinnitus is nog onbekend, maar we weten ongeveer wat de triggers zijn. Wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar Tinnitus staat nog in de kinderschoenen en wordt beperkt door het feit dat er geen objectieve of meetbare methode is om tinnitus te bepalen: er zijn geen bloed- of urinetests, geen hersenscans, geen genetische tests die kunnen bevestigen of iemand tinnitus heeft of niet.
Hier willen wij verandering in brengen door een baanbrekend onderzoek naar objectieve meting van tinnitus te financieren. Een samenwerking tussen Prof. Dirk De Ridder, Prof. Vanneste en Dr. Marco Congedo van de universiteiten van Otago, Texas, Dublin en Grenoble. Zij hebben onlangs aangetoond dat ze op basis van een EEG en door kunstmatige intelligentie, aan de hand van eenvoudige twee-dimensionele machine learning, met 88% zekerheid kunnen aantonen of iemand oorsuizen heeft of niet. Dit is gepubliceerd in het toonaangevende tijdschrift Nature Communications.
Om tot een echte objectieve maat voor tinnitus te komen die niet alleen de aan-of afwezigheid van tinnitus kan aantonen, maar ook de luidheid en de mate waarin het storend is, moeten ze meer geavanceerde kunstmatige intelligentie (A.I.) toepassen. Een succesvolle uitkomst van dat onderzoek zal het oorsuizen meetbaar en dus bespreekbaar maken. Maar vooral zal dit het onderzoek naar behandelingen explosief doen toenemen, de gezondheidszorg helpen en de industrie stimuleren om in tinnitus te investeren.
