Bring Eric Home

For the last 2 years our dear friend Eric Mass has been recovering from Guillian Barre Syndrome (GBS) and is nearly ready to come home. Yay! GBS is a rare immune system disorder which damages the nerve cells and results in paralysis of part or even your whole body. In Eric’s case, he was completely paralysed and could only move his eyes. He couldn’t speak or even breathe independently. Despite all these challenging events Eric has endured over the past 2 years he has remained positive, highly motivated and totally unstoppable. He encourages those around him and is genuinely a top bloke. With the support of many people and his amazing family Eric is close to being discharged from rehab.

Prior to contracting Guillian Barre Syndrome Eric took care of countless people working as an amazing nurse at Flinders Medical Centre for over 15 years. At no point throughout this difficult 2 year journey has Eric ever asked for help. However Eric’s colleagues in recovery would like to help Eric come home. In order to move home Eric needs the NDIS to approve his care plan and Marion Council to approve a ramp to be built at his house. This will make it possible for Eric to have wheelchair access to his home, and more importantly mean he can evacuate safely and independently in case of a fire. The cost of installing this ramp is approximately $38,000 with Disability SA refusing to cover any of this cost. Due to a lack of funding and the plans not being approved by Marion council Eric has no choice but to remain at Hampstead Rehabilitation centre. However, because Eric is now considered fit for discharge he is being charged $60 per day board. This is why we are so keen to ease the financial burden on Eric’s family and help raise money for Eric to come home!
