On 7th August 2017 eXXpeditionRoundBritian  will set off with a crew of 14 women from Plymouth around Britain and back to Plymouth on 4th September.
Ocean Health is Our Health
The cruise mission is researching plastics and toxic pollution in our seas, raising awareness and creating maximum publicity concerning the  marine plastic pollution crisis, through contacts with politicians and media, and through creative workshops and citizen science work with holiday makers, schools, campaigning groups and residents throughout the voyage

Thames Estuary Partnership is a charity working in London to provide a framework for sustainable management of the Thames, which provides a direct link between the city and the sea. Our work is essential for the social, economic and environmental future of the Thames.

TEP is working in collaboration to deliver a campaign to stop the flow of plastics pollution to the ocean through the #OneLess campaign against the use of single use plastic water bottles. With our network of contacts through the Coastal Partnerships Network (CPN), Fisheries Local Action Groups, Marine CoLABoration and the Marine Conservation Society , as well as Academic partners in the monitoring of plastic litter in the Thames, we are particularly well suited to participate in this eXXpedition.

The Thames Estuary Partnership Sailor
Kim Ferran Holt, TEP’s Marine Litter Coordinator , is slated to join the 1st leg of the journey from Plymouth to Glasgow, 7th-17th Aug.

Kim has a BSc. In Marine Biology and a MSc. in Coastal Zone Management with extensive graduate education and field experience in marine ecology and environmental education. Kim has been teaching marine biology and ecology to high school and college kids for many years.

Kim is coordinating an education and outreach project for the cruise which includes live streaming and video blogs for student  groups to experience a virtual scientific cruise.

This will include filming water and sediment samples and analyses for data such as salinity, dissolved oxygen, and temperature as well as plankton tows  to identify organisms in the food chain that are impacted by plastic pollution.

Student groups following the cruise online will also join the ship in each port to take part in beach cleans and to do hands on science in the field.

This type of interactive exchange can be pivotal in motivating the next generation of women in the sciences.

What’s Involved
This page is intended to raise awareness of the issue of marine plastic pollution and raise funds (£2650) for Kim Ferran Holt to secure her position on the 2017 eXXpedition cruise.

A word from Kim....
Efforts to secure a corporate sponsor are ongoing, but will not be finalised before the deadline for securing a space (basically due now). The non-profit that I work for cannot cover the expenses, though I am already working closely with the exxpedition and am invovled in several aspects of the cruise to coordinate the academic partners as well as my own education and outreach project for the entire cruise. Any funds raised  will be used to contribute to the operating costs of the voyage and continued efforts by TEP to tackle the flow of plastics into the ocean.
