Allan’s Journey Blossoms

Donation protected
For more than 20 years Allan has dedicated his life to artistic endeavors in the battle against injustice. Whether in support of women's rights or criminal justice reform or in the fight against racism, Allan has worked for inclusion, standing by immigrants and those who are wrongfully accused. In the case of almost every ism censorship Allan has convened dialogue to question the abuse of power. His work was done with little means, often using his modest personal resources and credit card debt to keep things afloat.

The work and stress took a toll and over the last three years his health was threatened by advanced liver disease and multiple hernias which were deemed inoperable until liver issues were resolved . In March of 2017 Allan began vomiting massive amounts of blood in the middle of the night, and was rushed to the ER. For the next 2 days he was mostly unconscious while doctors worked to save his life. Over the next year and a half Allan fought to get stronger while preparing for a possible liver transplant, Then in January 2018 the hernias incarcerated the intestine and Allan underwent emergency surgery in an operation that many don't survive. For a week he was not allowed to eat or drink. He spent nine weeks in the hospital in acute rehab and finally got back on his feet, with a new lease on life, just in time for the greening of the trees and a breath of fresh spring air.

Thanks to his dear friends at the Waverly Inn, who kindly brought him dinner every night, and thanks to collaboration with a team of dedicated activists he was able to continue work on the "Who We Are" project about the history of racism from his hospital bed. This went on to have a most successful launch at the Town Hall in NYC on July 19th.

Allan's health insurance helped to cover the in hospital medical expenses but premiums for 30 months have cost $26,400. The co-pays on emergency medical procedures and out patient procedures and medication co-pays have run to an additional $40,000, and necessary transportation is billed at $17,000. He will soon qualify for "access-a-ride" and has managed to secure a safe an affordable living space in Queens and switched to medicare B which reduced his insurance premiums by 60 %

The doctors are now recommending a TIPS procedure which is minimally invasive and will clear up the hernias and avoid the necessity of a liver transplant. First, however, a heart valve must be replaced. Other treatments include ongoing acupuncture and lymphatic massage and nutritional support that will help strengthen Allan for these procedures.

HIS ESTIMATED COSTS OVERALL ARE $120,000. A significant amount has been paid. In efforts to pay the remainder, the goal of this fund raising campaign is $50,000. Your support, large or small, will allow Allan to feel much less alone in this time of need.

With my humble and innermost gratitude,

Allan
