Pacific Cup 2016

Dear friends, out of all the nautical things I’ve done to make a living I have been teaching sailing the longest. I am so proud to do something I am passionate about. It is an activity that brings people together in such a healthy way; something that is not only good for people’s minds and hearts but something that is good for our planet. I’ve been able to make a happy living for myself doing what I love and I consider myself very fortunate. However, teaching sailing, like many labors of love, is  not a lucrative vocation. I’ve been and instructor for 17 years now, and after working through my summer evenings driving a tow boat after work and delivering yachts on my days off and weekends, I managed to get my own boat. With still more hard work and a lot of help, my crew and I successfully campaigned that boat until we were winning every race in our class. Then it was time to find the next challenge and boat. So I sold the Merit and bought the fastest boat I could afford to race to Hawaii next year. Realistically, the cost of the boat isn’t the half of the expense involved in this sort of undertaking. I am advised by those who have done this race that it will cost about 20,000 dollars in additional funding to attempt the endeavor. A lot of this cost is the required safety equipment. 3000 for a life raft 1000 for a satellite phone, etc.  So with reluctance I am starting a crowd-funding account and asking for help.

 

I believe that any good teacher is themselves a student of their craft. The Pacific Cup represents the next step in my development as a sailor. In exchange for this help I will be producing a documentary film in which I will log every step of this long journey. It is my hope that this will inspire  others to follow their dreams and expand their own horizon’s whatever they may be, and show that with each others support there is no dream to big and no journey to long.
