Erosion Control - K9 Acres

$280 of $3,000 goal

K9Cola Board of Directors have heard and listened to the complaints about the erosion at K9 Acres.  On Tuesday, May 1, 2018, the Board committed $3000 to fix this problem permanently.

We are partnering with Kirkwood Community College and some of their students to develop a plan to rectify this problem.  If we do not take care of it now, it will just continue to get worse.

Kirkwood is supplying the manpower and expertise to help us fix this problem as well as put some of the native plants back into this area to help with the erosion.

The project will begin sometime this summer.  Watch for details at k9cola.org and our facebook page  https://www.facebook.com/pg/k9cola.  K9Cola has agreed to pay for the materials that will be needed to complete this problem.  This is where we need your help!  Monetary donations are needed to cover the cost of the repair.

Phase 1 of the project is complete -

The pictures show the straw mats and tubes that were placed over the seeded area to protect the seed.

The pictured area is one of several places in K9Acres where water had created erosion channels. This project, led by Ken Carrol and his class from Kirkwood College, prepared the site - killed off existing grass, added soil to fill the channels, tilled the area then planted annual rye and native grasses. the annual rye is a cover crop to hold the soil and protect the native grasses in the first year. The native grasses take longer to root and develop. the straw mats protect both and hold moisture. The tubes help to hold the mats and slow an runoff.

If this is successful, we will attempt to do the bigger ditch area next spring / summer.
