Erin Smith Medical Recovery

Donation protected
On December 27 2016, Erin Smith went to the hospital for a simple scheduled procedure, that was performed without any complications. She stayed in the hospital for two days and was discharged to go home. Erin was expected to be fully recovered in 3 weeks and return to work.
While at home recovering, Erin's left arm became swollen, red, painful and appeared to be infected. This was only the beginning of an unexpected turn for the worst. On January 1st, Erin went to the ER for her arm and after blood work and ultrasound, she was told she had a blood clot and cellulitis on her arm....at the site from several FAILED IV ATTEMPTS during her stay at the hospital. The ER sent her home with oral antibiotics and Voltaren gel for her arm. By January 3rd, Erin's arm had tripled in size! She followed up with the vascular surgeon, who immediately admitted her to Kennestone Hospital for IV antibiotic therapy.
Twenty four hours later, on January 4th, Erin's arm showed no signs of improvement and was severely worse, with drainage oozing out of her arm. She was rushed into the operating room immediately! Doctors then discovered that the infection was much worse than anticipated.  They had to remove a large portion of Erin's arm...from a few inches above her wrist, all the way to a few inches from her shoulder, including part of her bicep muscle, tissue, and vein.
The bacteria in her arm is an extremely rare form of Necrotizing Fasciitis, also known as flesh-eating bacteria. Erin has had to undergo several more surgeries on her arm, and endure severe physical and emotional pain. Erin's arm has now finally been cleared of the infection, but she has a very long road ahead of her.  She will be out of work for at least 3-6 months! During the next 6 weeks, she will have a wound VAC on her arm that has to be changed 3 times a week, and IV antibiotics at home during this time as well. She will also have to see an occupational therapist twice a week, to try and regain full function of her arm and hand. This will force Richard to take time off of work too, which will also affect their income.
As you can imagine, this situation has been extremely traumatic for Erin, and her family, but she has been a  soldier through it all.  Due to this devastating and completely unforseen life changing event, the financial burden left on Erin and her family is unknown and very scary. The family appreciates your love and support, during this difficult time. They have felt everyone's prayers, and are so thankful to God for watching over Erin.
