Eric's Post-Concussion Rehabilitation

Hey everyone!
My name is Eric Spencer and I am creating a GoFundMe to raise money for my family's medical expenses. Very recently my life changed drastically! If you know me, you know that I have always been extremely active and outgoing. All of this changed following my injury on 7/1/2019. I was participating in a basketball tournament in Spokane, Washington when I sustained a head injury which led to an altered mental status and "tunnel vision" followed by severe neck spasms. Being hard-headed and stubborn, I continued playing basketball over the weekend and did not stop to realize what had just occurred.
I had suffered a concussion.
OFTEN, concussion symptoms manifest over the next 7-10 days following initial injury and typically resolve over the next several weeks. Unfortunately, concussions are often mismanaged and misdiagnosed early on and this leads to complications with recovery. Without proper diagnosis and rest, often those who suffer concussions will continue with their normal activities and not receive adequate rest in order to make a full recovery at that time. This is my story.
I am now about 4 months out from my initial concussion and have experienced significantly debilitating symptoms. Many days I experience severe headaches, nausea, dizziness, difficulty taking care of my two girls due to sensitivity to loud noises, sensitivity to lights and computer screens which affects my work as a physical therapy, depressive-like symptoms, anxiety, personality changes and mood fluctuations that are so far from what I am used to that I just feel like someone else! It is very hard to understand for someone who has never experienced this before and you can imagine how difficulty it is for Erica and our family. Being transparent and vulnerable has helped during this process and now it is time to take my life back! The first step in doing so is to raise money to be able to seek top tier treatment options at a premier concussion treatment center in Utah. I will include a link to their website:

This has been a truly challenging time for me and my family. We are firm believers in Jesus and we know that we will be provided for during these trials and we want to not only ask for monetary help but also prayers and support and love because we believe in the power of prayer!
I have recently sought treatment options that require travel to Provo, Utah to undergo extensive rehab. for post-concussion management. I have come to this decision because I can hardly function day to day to be the husband, father and physical therapist I need to be for my family and for my job. Currently, my family is trusting in God for provision as we only have a single income as Erica is now a stay at home mom for our two girls. My health being in jeopardy has truly challenged the very fabric of our family. I trust that this team at CognitiveFX will be able to help me regain my quality of life and function to be able to return to loving and providing for my family and for my own patients!
The multi-disciplinary team at CognitiveFX will conduct a series of brain tests, or scans, that include functional MRI testing to determine which areas of my brain are most injured. Then they will use their team of neuropsychologists and therapists to challenge my brain and to develop a specific treatment plan for me to continue over the next several months. The testing and treatment consist of roughly 30 hours over a one week period and will begin and end with functional MRI testing to determine progress with therapy. Following completion of therapy, I will continue with my rehab. independently in California.
If we are able to raise the funds to receive treatment for this medical condition from this team of experts, I am confident that I will be able to be the husband and father my family needs! Erica has been so patient with me during this process, but I know she needs me! This treatment will help our family to endure through this tumultuous time. On November 19th, I am participating in preliminary screening to be accepted as a new patient as many patients travel from all over the world to participate in concussion management at this facility in Utah. This premier team of specialists will help me to receive the adequate care I need. Unfortunately, the medical team I have consulted with here locally have provided limited help and options to battle this frustrating and challenging diagnosis (this is often the case with post-concussion syndrome). These funds will allow me to be accepted as a patient at CognitiveFX's facility and I will be able to participate within the time frame of this year (2019)! We are believing for a breakthrough for my health so Erica and I can continue forward with our calling to reach others for Christ!
We appreciate all those whom are able to help and provide support financially but we also do not want to overlook the power of prayer and the request we are making for spiritual support and for prayer warriors to help lift up our family during this time! I know that we will make it through this valley and that God is doing something miraculous even as we walk THROUGH it! We won't be stopped in the valley- we're making it THROUGH!
