Educators On Call is organizing its 4th Annual Book Drive for Dr. Seuss Day, on March 2, 2016. Our mission is to deliver a library of books and a very special Dr. Seuss Day celebration to youth experiencing life's challenges. Youth Service, Inc and their young clients will be the recipients of our book drive collection. This book drive is held in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday and is also celebrated as "Read Across America Day", organized by the National Education Association to promote daily reading.
What you may not know is Philadelphia is one of the lowest ranking metropolitan cities in Reading proficiency; according to the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) test. With 27% of its residents falling below the line of poverty, Philadelphia also has one of the highest poverty rates in the nation. Youth 18 and under make up almost ¼ of this population. One can guess that this would have a negative impact on a child’s education. Unfortunately, homeless youth are even more likely to struggle in school due to the lack of stability. Families experiencing homelessness often arrive at PEC's emergency housing in search of a safe place to make a fresh start, with nothing but clothes and a few belongings. Over 60% of low-income families have no children’s books in the home. Just like their wealthier peers, poor children need books that they like, ones they choose themselves, at their level and on topics that interest them.
We need your support to make this year’s drive a success. Your donations will support the book drive through the purchasing of new books for the center’s library, allow each child to select books to keep, along with materials for our Dr. Seuss Day party, to be held onsite for the young people on site. Educators On Call is dedicated to the young people we serve, inside and outside of the classroom. We hope you will join us in our mission to ingnite a passion for reading.
