enough / enough

Oh. What's This?

This is an anthology focusing on survivors identifying as trans* and non-binary seeking safety in impossible-seeming places. We are often not believed as men, women, or somewhere in-betweeen--survivors are rarely believed in their stories, boundaries, and ability to say yes and no. In this collection of letters written to body parts, enough / enough is the coming together for those of us who have been fragmented. This is for those of us who have found power in re-shaping our bodies, families, homes, and creating new definitions of what wholeness means. Click here! to see what goes into each letter that will fill the pages for this future book with a tenative publishing date in late-summer 2017.

This fundraising page went up in summer 2016 as a place to have the means for a top surgery in addition to creating the anthology. My will tapered off for a few months as I navigated shame surrounding asking for help, as well as my body, money,  and "life direction." It gets awfully loud in my head with other people's questions, but I know what I need to be healthy when I dance, acknowledge the rest of my body, and let others into my non-linear healing process.

So I'm back because of and despite of everything. I'm back because publishing companies told me that anthologies are not "profitable." I'm back because of dysphoria and dissociation and the internal-external battle to feel real. I'm back because when I'm honest I know exactly who I am and what I'm here to do. Hi, today I am here with you and for you. And I'm slowly learning to say these words to myself as much as I say them to other people.

$$

With the super generous funding received so far, I will pay for printing of future books for all participants and supporting organizations, plus the publishing fees for Create Space and the official webpage. Additional funding will also go towards the development of workshops and performance-spaces, and hopefully give me the ability to take fewer hours at my job-job so I can afford to pour more time / energy into this baby.

Tangled into this letter-writing project and personal healing process, I also hope to eventually raise enough to cover the costs for top-surgery with Dr. Garramone and related medical and travel expenses. This part of the fundraising is secondary to making the book, and would not be fully covered in my current goal amount of $9500.

The Impact

Indescribable to anyone not living in my body + a huge ripple effect as I will have more time / energy / support in curating my anthology project alongside other survivors identifying as  trans* and non-binary.

Other Ways You Can Help

Talk with your trans* and non-binary community members, and give yourself permission to grow in every direction. Be a friend and support friend art. Trust that there is nothing straight or linear in this process. Sing until you cry. Ask questions while remaining open to a range of answers. Let us have many many many stories and galaxies because we are so many things at the same time. Value LGBTQ* folks' safety over your discomfort. Learn about the barriers we encounter within medical systems, access to adequate housing and transition homes, etc. etc. etc.

I also super appreciate any kind words and voices and validations (without romanticizing my experiences, pls). Maybe hang out with me during eventual recovery time! Bed-side karaoke. Talk to me about a graphic novel I'm dreaming up because that's one of my favorite things to talk about (here's an animation of the first section). And of course, talk with me about letter-drive and any ideas you may have for outreach and collaboration. Print this poster (designed by me and Jacob Firman) to hang in expected and unexpected places. Talk with me and people you love about your dreams and times you felt glad to be in your body.
