End Almajiri Child Slavery: Nigeria

Tax deductible
FULLY FUNDED!  THANKS TO EVERYONE!

“Almajiri”
are boys delivered to Islamic centers as young as 4-years-old, by impoverished parents seeking the free “education” Muslim teachers (malams) provide.

10 million Almajiris are enslaved in this system in northern Nigeria.

They’re brainwashed, learning only the Koran, beaten if they recite improperly.

The boys sleep in filthy quarters; they beg, barefoot, starving in the streets; they are sodomized ; they are “rented out” as slaves; they are chained up ; they are abducted and used in sacrifices by cultists.

66.2% are drug-users - 95% have intestinal worms.

60% of Almajiris never return to their homes. They are trapped in poverty, uneducated, unemployable, damaged by abuse.

Many end up as criminals or as terrorists - 80% of Boko Haram are ex-Almajiri. Info HERE, HEREHERE and HERE

“its undignified, it’s subhuman, no one should be subjected to that kind of life”  - Chidi Odinkalu, Nigerian Human Rights Commission Chairman

Brighter Brains Institute (BBI), a humanist USA nonprofit, seeks to eliminate the societal crises Almajjiri system.

We join millions of Nigerians (of every religion) to end this human rights catastrophe.

BBI formed the Nigeria Humanist Policy Centre -  (NHPC), directed by humanist Nigerians, to: 1) advocate the end of Almajiri slavery; 2) to deliver employable skills to the boys; 3) to alleviate their present-day suffering.

BBI/NHPC is collaborating with Humanist Society of Northern Nigeria, Atheist Society of Nigeria, and ENDS [Every Nigerian Do Something].

Leo Igwe - winner of the Distinguished Services to Humanism Award from the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) - is a NHPC director; plus Hauwa Mahdi, PhD.,  a distinguished lecturer on gender relationships and child rights; and activist Mubarak Bala (who condemns the Almajiri system HERE and HERE).
