My friend and her family have stuck by her side taking turns being by her bedside, and have missed a lot of work to stay with her and keep up to date with doctors.
Olivia is doing better but is not in the clear yet. She has a long way to go, and any contribution would be so greatly appreciated .
This has gotten even bigger and more amazing than I could have imagined for my friends family. Thank you all so much for all that you have contributed. Keep the prayers coming!
Hi everyone. My name is Marisol and I'm one of Olivia's older sisters. My sister started feeling cruddy the weekend of August 9- just feeling a bit feverish and under the weather. After a couple days, she went to urgent care and was told it was a virus. A couple days after that, she was taken to the hospital where tests were given; all came back negative. The doctors said she had a virus that would clear up in a few days. We took her home and tried nursing her back to health. When fevers, body aches, headaches, abdomen pain, and random terrible knee pain persisted, we brought her to the ER at a different hospital. It was there we found out she had become septic and needed surgery to find out what was happening in her abdomen. Surgery showed an infection that had started in the uterus, spread up to her fallopian tubes, ovaries, stomach, and into her blood. A liter of puss was drained from her belly. We found out that the infection had been caused by Streptococcos, the same bacteria that causes Strep Throat. It is a flesh-eating bacteria that terrorizes the body. We also were given the news that she has Toxic Shock Syndrome. Because the bacteria had spread, it has damaged her organs. Her doctor described it as a storm that ravaged her body and left a lot of damage to rebuild. As of August 22, the infection is out of her blood thanks to antibiotics. Her kidneys, which were failing when we arrived at the hospital, are functioning well. Her blood platelets are looking better. We are not out of the woods yet, though. Her lungs and liver are in rough shape and we are praying they will become healthy again. Her body creeps into fevers off and on. She is still connected to a breathing tube. She is vulnerable to other bacteria since her immune system is down. She is still Olivia though. Sweet as ever when she wakes up every so often; trying to mouth thankyou to nurses and waving to visitors, smiling, and writing us notes that she wants to walk. The road to recovery is long, but we have been with her every step of the way so far and will continue to be with her. This is why this page is so important for us. Our family has missed a week of work in order to support each other and stay by her side while she is in critical condition. Unfortunately, none of us have paid leave. We also need to make some adjustments to our home in order for it to be suitable for her recovery. We hope to have professional cleaners come into our home to get dirt, dust and pet dander/hair off of furniture. We hope to buy at least one air purifier to help out her fragile lungs. We plan to get rid of our cats to help her allergies, so we will need to buy lots of cleaning products to clean up after them (if you have cats, you know what i mean!). It would be amazing to be able to clean out the air ducts in our home. Our big-dream goal is to buy her a new bed since our cats have laid on her mattress since she was 5 when it was bought. We don't expect anything, but at least you know what our plans are and you have all the info to pray her back to health with us. Thank you so, so much for caring.
