Emy’s Breast Cancer Fight

Donation protected
Hello friends and family,

This is an extremely difficult life changing moment to share. As we all may know or don’t know yet, Emy was diagnosed with Breast Cancer (Invasive Ductal Carcinoma stage 2) back in June 15. She had a double mastectomy (both breast removed) surgery on June 28 2018. Emy has been under the care of her OBGYN, Oncologist, Plastic surgeon, General breast surgeon, and Gyno Oncologist, and Fertility Specialist. She has been going to many appointments almost every day in preparations to cure her.

Emy will be starting her chemo therapy on August 30 2018. Doctors have already determined she will need chemo (Taxol and Adriamycin and Cytoxan with Neulasta) for a total of 16 cycles which will be given for 5 months. The first three months will be Taxol once a week and the last 2 months would be AC bi-weekly.

There is an OOP max through her insurance that she must meet before she gets 100% coverage. And with the money that she has been able to collect she covered half of her costs.

One of the effects that chemo has is that it can damage her ovaries. She tested high risk for ovarian cancer through the genetic testing. Due to this tragic news, doctors have decided to keep all options open. Although Emy has a beautiful 6-year-old daughter, Ava. Doctors have decided for her overall health it is best to preserve her eggs. Emy is only 24 years old and she has a long life ahead of her. Therefore, it is best to keep all options open for her to continue building her family in the future.

Unfortunately, this is considered fertility treatment and is not covered under her insurance policy. Thankfully, Livestrong foundation along with Walgreens heartbeat program covered the $8,000 of the medication cost and $7,000 of the procedure is needed to get this done on time before chemo. This is apart from any extra expenses such as gas, food, and the other medical expenses.

This is where we all come in to help Emy with this financial burden. Emy has been unable to get clearance for work due to the recovery of her double mastectomy and the two surgeries that follow chemo. Emy will be having surgery for her port for chemo on Thursday August 23, and then chemo right after on August 30. Then she will be needing to remove her ovaries to avoid recurrence of breast cancer due to hormones.

It is a blessing to have the medical team’s support from Sylvester Cancer Center at UM Plantation.

Finally, if all goes well, her last surgery would be breast reconstructive surgery. It is at that point that we will know Emy has reached her destination to cure her cancer and has fought this battle.

Besides the physical and emotional changes this has already affected Emy, everything comes with a cost. Therefore, I ask from everyone who reads this story to keep in mind that Emy is a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend, and overall an amazing young lady who has all her life ahead of her. We are asking for your help and anyone else who you can reach out to help Emy fight this battle together. Any dollar counts & makes a difference!! God Bless you all.
