Homeless Health and Empowerment Across Learning has one goal: to provide our homeless community with the knowledge to manage their health and improve health outcomes.
Our Story:
In his volunteering shifts at the Emergency Department, our founder would recognize some of the same homeless patients returning to the ED. He became interested in what happens to these patients once they are discharged and he learned that they often have no place to go to fully recover and usually end up back in the hospital. He realized that failing to address the root cause of these patients’ health problems only perpetuates the vicious cycle of homelessness and results in poor health outcomes. Seeking a solution, he participated in feeding the homeless programs where he would go to areas the homeless stay to serve them food. In the process, he came to better understand their living conditions and became driven to make an impact in this underserved community. His search for solutions led him to the San Diego Rescue Mission, a faith-based medical respite center, where care extends to encompass the patient’s social and environmental circumstances.
Together with a group of talented students, we created a health education class for the homeless that taught the science behind some of the unique health challenges their environmental circumstances pose. The program has proven successful, as many of our clients have broken their destructive habits and taken charge of their health. The San Diego Rescue Mission made our class a requirement for their program and we continue to receive requests to work with other homeless centers.
Through a partnership with the University of California, San Diego, Homeless HEAL will continue the legacy of empowering the homeless community with the knowledge to make better health decisions and improve their health outcomes. Our student educators are passionate UCSD students who believe in the power of knowledge and science to improve health decision-making by informing individuals of the effects the consequences of their actions have on their bodies, from a scientific point of view.

-Class materials, such as notebooks and pens that our audience members can keep.
-Presentation materials, such as a projector and microphone.
-Services, such as printing services to provide satisfaction surverys or pamphlets.
