Classroom in Need
Hi! This is Joanne and I am about to start my 16th year as a NYC public school teacher. I have learned a lot during these years but one of the biggest lessons I have learned is how to make do with the little that I have. For the past 13 years I have been working at a Title I school which means that we service students who are most at risk for failing in school, including children and youth experiencing homelessness. As a public school we do recieve government funding but this funding is not enough to meet all of the needs of individual classrooms. I teach an inclusive kindergarten class which means that about half of my students receive special education services for a variety of needs such as learning & speech delays, physical & occupational therapy needs as well as behavioral needs. My co-teacher and I work extremely hard to create a learning environment that meets the individual needs of all of the learners in our class.
Unfortunately our resources are very limited. In order for us to be able to give our students the best opportunities available to succeed, we are asking for your help. There are some items in particular that we have been dreaming about for our students. At this time we have three particular items that we are trying to fundraise for. Any additional money that is collected will go directly to other supplies for our students, in particular items that are necessary for our students with sensory integration needs.
We thank you in advance for any help that you are able to offer. Even if you can not personally donate, we ask that you please share this fundraiser with your family and friends. Every little bit counts.
It takes a village to raise and educate a child. I'm hoping that we can build a village that will help me educate a classroom of children.
We are happy to say that we officially surpassed our initial fundraising goal and have been able to secure the 3 initial items that we wanted for our classroom: the tables, chairs and cushions.
From this point on, any additional funds that we receive will go towards obtaining a new classroom library. My co-teacher, Veronica Vizcaino, and I have also decided that we will be paying it forward and will be using part of our funds towards our school and not just our classroom. We are looking forward to helping fund school wide projects / initiatives with funds from this account.
We are extremely happy and honored that you have chosen to support our students. The students of PS 111 are extremely blessed to receive the support of individuals, companies and organizations.
I absolutely want to thank all of the individuals that have donated any amount to the fund. I also want to thank Maria Roca from Combined Insurance for partnering up with our school and donating some much needed items. Also a special thank you to Diana Perez, president of Kappa Eta, Nursing Honor Society for a wonderful donation and continued support. And lastly a huge thank you to Dyckman Bar (221 Dyckman Street, NY, NY. 10040) for sponsoring tonight's fundraiser. If you are in the area please join us from 5-10pm for networking, while we raise funds for our school.

I thought it would be useful to add some information about the items that I'm fundraising for, especially since many of you reading this are not familiar with the importance of these items for a classroom.
Hope this information encourages more people to consider donating to our cause.
2 Rainbow Group Tables: $319 each
These tables will be used by both the general education and special education teachers, when working with small groups of children. Small group work is done throughout the day and groups are created based on classroom informal & formal assessments. These groups allow teachers to give children specially tailored attention that they would not be able to receive during whole group lessons.
Howdahug seats: $78.50 each
The hold of the HUG and the cradle and rock creates a deep sensory experience, good for all kids! The benefits of the HUG provide children with a keener sense of their own space. Occupational Therapists and Special Education Teachers endorse the HowdaHUG over other seating for helping children with Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder(SPD), Attention Deficit Disorders (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and other spectrum disorders or just fidgety kids .
Gymnic / Movin' Sit Jr. Inflatable Wedge Chair Cushion: $32 each
The Movin' Sit Jr. Air Cushion is an inflatable dynamic cushion that activates intrinsic trunk muscles to support the spine. The wedge shape encourages a seated posture with a forward pelvic position. These cushions are also endorsed by physical and occupational therapists, as well as classroom teachers because of the sensory input that it provides. The seating position that it encourages helps promote attention.
