Emily's Medical Cannabis Card

$785 of $685 goal

Raised by 28 people in 36 months

Hi there!

I’m Applying for Medical Cannabis in Illinois.

Having been diagnosed with fibromyalgia in October 2014, my condition has deteriorated to the point that I'm unable to drive and accomplishing everyday tasks like doing the dishes or taking a shower have become extremely difficult. I am no longer worrying about social stigma; I'm applying for my medical marijuana card.

Getting that card comes with a price tag:

$300 (State of IL application fee for 3 years)
$385 (MCO fee & doctor fee)

$685 (Total)

Aside from raising the money to pay for my application, my goal is to keep my symptoms under control so that I can keep my full-time job, get relief from pain and other debilitating symptoms, and improve my quality of life.

I'm so thankful for anyone who is willing to play a part in helping me get there--either by dontating or sharing this campaign with your friends.

Peace, love, medical dope,

I have great news to report! This weekend I received the donation that got me to 100% of my fundraising goal.

I am excited and so very thankful to everyone that contributed, shared posts on social media, and offered words of encouragement.

When I first set up this campaign, I thought, "It'd sure would be helpful if I raised a couple hundred dollars." I didn't have any expectation that I would raise the full $685.

So much about my prolonged illness has felt like a fight -- a fight with doctors, a fight with bill collectors, a fight with pain and insomnia, a fight with bad prescriptions, a fight to get out of bed in the morning, a fight against myself, a fight against the beuracracy of the State of Illinois.

This $685 battle was one a bunch of other awesome people fought for me.

It might be a while before I have my card and am able to participate in the Illinois medical cannabis program. If you'd like to follow along with the rest of my progress, please connect with me on my blog:

The Perfectly Posh fundraiser continues until September 25, and proceeds will help me pay for dispensary purchases. (As you probably know, medical marijuana is not yet covered by insurance.) You can join the Facebook event. Joiningg the online event doesn't obligate you to make a purchase, by the way. You can just lurk and check out the products that are available if you like.

Thanks again to all of you.

Peace, love, medical dope!

Yesterday I got mail from the Illinois Department of Public Health. It was a notice of incomplete application. It might've stressed me out, but the folks at MCO told me to expect it and not to worry.

There are a couple of things I have to get to IDPH before they'll approve my application. I've emailed Medical Cannabis Outreach for their advice on next steps, since they know way more about it.

In the meantime, I'm over here waiting and asking you to share or consider a $5 donation.

Medical Cannabis Outreach (the group that helped me get my application in order and find a doctor that wasn't anti-cannabis) is comprised of patients helping other patients.

I can't travel around the state with them, but I can still help patients by speaking out. This week I wrote to my senators and representative:

Although 25 states have legalized medical cannabis, it's still technically illegal to manufacture, sell, or possess marijuana according to federal law. That's one of the reasons it's so difficult to access medical cannabis -- even in states where it's allowed. It leads to the following conundrums:

* Many doctors are prohibited by hospial administration from signing certification forms

* Independent doctors are reluctant to put themselves and their practices at risk

* On the whole, doctors must overcome a knowledge gap when it comes to identifying which patients and conditions could benefit from medical marijuana

The healthier I am, the harder I will fight for reforms at the federal level to improve patients' access and improve patients lives. Please help by donating to my application fund or sharing the campaign link via email and social media.

Hello, it's update time!

Yesterday, I received my corrected driver's license in the mail. It's one more small step toward getting my medical cannabis card, but I still have a lot of waiting to do. Waiting for relief might actually be harder than the application process--that's saying something!

As time goes on, I'm inching ever closer to my fundraising goal, though. And seeing the donations and kind words that have come in so far has been pretty damn uplifting. Every time I get a notification, Dan and I pause to celebrate the generosity of our friends and even a few total strangers.

I'm taking a break from asking for donations today. I'll kick the campaign back into gear later in the week. For now, I just want to tell everyone thanks from the bottom of my heart for donating and helping to spread the word.

Such a flattering photo!
