Emily Fans for Dogs Trust

Donation protected
For fans of Emily Bett Rickards, it's very well known that she's devoted to her rescue dog, Ophelia, and that she's passionate about rescue dogs. One thing that we've learned through her Arrow character, Felicity Smoak, is that we should always help as much as we can when we have the means to, and through her character's incredibly heroism and Emily's love of animals, I've set up this collection to present as her fans for a donation to the charity Dogs Trust.

Dogs Trust is the UK’s largest dog welfare charity and cares for over 15,000 dogs each year through its network of 20 rehoming centres in the UK - and one in Dublin.  Whether it's implementing a system for intercepting and rehoming puppies which have been illegally smuggled into the UK, designing a nationwide network of affordable dog training classes, or developing an animal ambulance service for collecting dogs that are about to be put to sleep in pounds, Dogs Trust continue to introduce life-saving projects.

In 2016 alone, they rehomed over 13,000 dogs into loving homes, and the number of dogs in the UK micro-chipped was estimated at 95%, and almost double rise from the 2013 estimation. The biggest example of their impact is that in 1997 the number of health dogs destroyed by local authorities was a staggering 21,840, and it was after this that Dogs Trust began their neutering, micro-chipping and education activities, and in 2016 this number had decreased to 3,463.

Their work on The Hope Project provides free veterinary care for dogs whose owners are homeless or in housing crisis alongside over one hundred veterinary practices across the country, working alongside almost three hundred homelessness organisations and shelters. Dogs Trust have also been able to extend The Freedom Project into Essex, in addition to London, Hertfordshire and Yorkshire; a unique pet fostering service which helps dog owners escape domestic abuse by providing a safe 'at-home' volunteer foster carer to look after their dog while they find safe accommodation.

On an international scale, Dogs Trust have also worked to vaccinate over 98,000 dogs in India and 90,000 in Malawi as part of their work with Mission Rabies, and have worked in the Sarajevo province in Bosnia to humanely reduce the stray dog population by neutering over 10,000 dogs and training 60 vets in surgical neutering skills. They also work with population control programmes in a variety of countries across the world, help train vets in a variety of procedures around the world, as well as assist with providing financial and technical assistance to improve existing shelter facilities.

Donations to the Dogs Trust can help so much with such easy amounts:

£1-5 - a bag of treats for a dog
£12 - the cost of micro-chipping a dog
£18 - a cosy bed
£20 - vaccinations
£21 - special formula puppy food
£33 - weekly vet checks
£40 - training classes
£90 - neutering procedure

It's so hard to condense all the great work that Dogs Trust do into one page, but you can read more about Dogs Trust at their following pages:

Their work isn't possible without the hardworking staff, volunteers and donors, and most importantly, the donations help fund their amazing work. As a dog owner myself who's grown up adopting from Dogs Trust and volunteering at our local centre, I know first hand the amazing work they do for their dogs and their communities.

I would love to see Emily's fans come together to raise money for a wonderful charity that doesn't just match dogs with loving homes, but also takes active steps to ensure that as many dogs as possible aren't put in situations where shelters are needed.

I hope to be able to give her a few Dogs Trust trinkets (purchased from their charity shop) and details of this fundraising campaign if she should attend Heroes & Villains FanFest in London in May 2018, but if for any reason she doesn't attend, I'll hold onto the information and pass it along to her at another convention :)
