1927 Commemorative Train Trip

IN THE FALL of 1927, Artist and Author EMILY CARR boarded a train in Vancouver, travelling eastward to Ottawa to see her first paintings on exhibit in the National Gallery. This is where her art was introduced to all of Canada. This was where she met the Group of Seven painters, and was inspired to continue painting the wild Canadian landscape in her own interpretation and style.
In October 2017, this historic trip will be commemorated on its 90th Anniversary, with a live actor performing as EMILY CARR, from Vancouver through the Rockies and Prairies to Ottawa. Travelling with one other actor and one technical crew, the purpose of this trip is to celebrate this historic Canadian icon, share her personality, art and written works with new generations of Canadians across the country.
We are planning to stop at 5 cities between Vancouver and Ottawa, offering three different programs per stop: Educational school appearances, Tea with Emily Carr, and a one-act-one woman theatrical presentation about her famous Chrystal Garden speech, “Fresh Seeing”.
FOR the last 18 years, Molly Raher Newman has been playing the role of EMILY CARR at the place of her birth, Emily Carr House, around British Columbia, and in Ontario, where she was artist in residence at the famous McMichael Gallery in Kleinburg. Ms. Newman has a special ability to make Emily’s words live again, giving new perspective to her writings. Emily’s personality will educate and inspire thousands as the train travels across the country.
Through the “Toonie a Leaf” interactive project, we will invite people to write a message to Canada on large paper leaves, installing a giant BC arbutus tree on Parliament Hill, delivering a West Coast hello to our nation's capital for Canada's 150th birthday!
We are excited about bringing Emily Carr's positive message to Canadians this October. Over the next months we will be hosting a variety of fundraising events, offering sponsorship and cross-promotional opportunities. We are inviting you to be part of this unique, historic adventure!
