Emily is a young woman in her 20's Living with a type of mitochondrial disease that has damaged or weakened nearly every body system.
One of the major problems she has faced is paralysis of her stomach and intestine (also known as gastroparesis and chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction, or digestive tract paralysis for short). Nutritionally she relies on intravenous fluids and nutrients, known as TPN. This has required her to have a large IV known as a central line, which extends from her chest into a large vein ending at the top of the heart.
Unfortunately, Emily has had many, incredibly dangerous infections that have nearly taken her life. It is no longer safe for her to remain on TPN, so her only other option at this point is what's known as a multi-visceral transplant, which will include the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, pancreas, and the liver (though at this point her liver is still healthy and will likely not be transplanted).
The purpose of this fundraiser is to help cover the costs related to the transplant as she and her family must relocate to Cleveland, OH. While her insurance will likely cover the majority of her medical care, but the cost of housing, meals, etc., while still paying the bills at home for up to 8+ months is a huge burden. Given the family's financial need, this could be a roadblock to this potentially lifesaving surgery.
