Emergency Dialysis & Kidney Transplant

Donation protected
I am writing this on behalf of my brother, Paul Varley. On the evening of April 23rd, Paul was involved in a motorcycle accident. Gratefully, no other vehicles were involved, but the accident resulted in an open fracture with a shattered elbow in Paul's left arm in addition to a broken clavicle.

The damaged arm was bad enough, but the circumstances quickly became more serious. While in the ER awaiting reconstructive surgery, Paul and his young family learned that he has end stage renal disease and is currently in renal failure. In short, Paul's kidney's have failed. To throw out a couple of quick numbers, a healthy person has kidney function near 100% . A person is eligible for the transplant list at 20% . Paul is sitting at 7% . Doctors were genuinely surprised Paul was functioning as well as he was with his kidney's in that shape. However, because of the state of his kidney's, the reconstructive surgery has been temporarily placed on hold. Currently, Paul could not handle such an extensive operation. As his sister, it was more than I could handle watching him lay in that bed, his shattered arm laying unfixed and immobile at his side, still bleeding, while he tried so hard to be tough through the pain.

I can only imagine the worry going through his mind. Will he be able to fix his arm? What about his kidney's, will he be able to get a transplant? How will he work without his arm, or while going through dialysis 3 times a week, 3 hours a day? Or while recovering from a transplant? How will he support his family? What about hospital bills? I can only imagine the similar worry going through his girlfriends mind. These are hardworking people. Paul is a service representative for VW and Anissa is a pharmacy supervisor awaiting entrance into pharmacy school. Together they have a beautiful two year old son named Weston.

As a family, we are coming together in strong financial support of Paul and his family. We would be grateful to anyone who has the means/desire to contribute as well, whether that means a couple of dollars or just sharing this post. We cannot do anything to change his shattered arm, or his kidney failure (though as a family we are all getting tested to be donors), but if we can eliminate some of the financial anxiety, I know that will go a long way towards giving him the fight he needs to pull through this rough time.

Thank you for reading this. We will continue to provide updates as they become available.
