Support for Ellen Geist~
Our liver transplant "poster girl" has been hit hard and is facing disabling symptoms and syndromes resulting from immunosuppressant drugs.
It's been a rough year for Ellen with many health challenges. She is currently navigating the need to be on oxygen 24 hrs a day and quite possibly facing the need to give up her independent lifestyle and to seek assisted living care but for now is going to try and manage with the help of in home assisted care.
We're collectively raising funds to help meet her current needs of in home help . There is also an immediate need for a state-of-the-art portable oxygen machine that will allow her to be able and feel secure leaving her apartment for her needed doctors appointments and simple visits to the park near her home. She is also in need of extensive dental procedures to assist her with eating and maintaining health.
Ellen's environment needs to be kept especially clean, dust and mold free.
We'd like to be able to purchase an air filter for her apartment as well as a Continual Clean cat litter box.
Ideally we'll be able to provide her with an ongoing cleaning service which will help create a healthy living situation that will be more easily maintained.
Ellen will be facing on going needs that will require financial help. Currently we have set a goal to help her navigate the most pressing short term needs.
This site is a great place to connect with Ellen- leave her notes of encouragement, check in with her and arrange a phone date. If able to visit in person consider bringing her a healthy meal and possibly an additional meal for the freezer that she can enjoy later. Her meal requirements are Kosher or vegetarian.
We thank you all for your love and support!!
David and June
She is in the home hospice program through Medicare, supplementing their limited service with private hire care for her current 24 hr. needs. Her husband, Jon, and her daughter, Sasha, are juggling nights to be with her through this critical period.
We do have much warranted hope and are positive she will improve with the increased care she is getting, focusing on nutrition, hydration and a consistent medication program.
If you have the time, please send a note or give her a call to offer her support and encouragement.
Again I thank you.
My recent visit to my sister, Ellen, left me with contrasting impressions. On the one
hand I saw a woman functioning extremely well in navigating the world of doctors,
legal assistance, health support systems and bills. On the other hand I witnessed a
woman struggling to accomplish basic daily tasks. Making meals, cleaning, bathing,
etc. could be accompanied by drops in oxygen levels, coughing fits and need for
recovery techniques with nebulizer and concentrated breathing. Our short walks
outside for essential exercise of a block or 2 could necessitate a strategy of stops for
rest and oxygen level recovery.
Luckily she can currently afford to have a nurse’s aid for a few hours on a daily basis
to assist her with her daily survival at home. She has afforded a portable oxygen
extractor, portable nebulizer and other home health aids. With the help you have
generously given through the GoFundMe site this is a reality. The care and concern
you have shown through your offerings is a wonderful example of how we can, as a
group, take care of each other and better our world.
We currently have in the GoFundMe account enough money to continue this for
another 3 weeks. Please consider a monthly donation to support Ellen’s efforts to
improve her health and be able to live semi-independently at home. Again I thank
As the days go by, I am more and more blown away by the response to my sister June's lovely letter and the site she created (with support from brother David and daughter Sasha). The $$$ are incredible and so far have already secured me my vital portable oxygen condenser. I couldn't even leave the apt without it! Other $$ will be used for oxygen reel, battery operated nebulizer, possibly a bipap machine, rental oxygen costs, back and current bill for private pay aides while working on getting medicaid (? thank you, Mr. Trump for your slash and burn cuts!!?) and so much more. But truly immeasurable and infinite is the love you all are showing me and the care embodied in these donations. In my heart I know it will help me make it through and beyond this ordeal.
