Elizabeth & Baby Road to Recovery

Donation protected
On July 7th Elizabeth got the shock of her life when, at 25 weeks pregnant she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

For 10 days Elizabeth was being treated for what she thought was the flu and a sinus infection. Being too weak to work or get out of bed, she took herself back to the doctor. They discovered that her blood count was so low that she should not have been able to walk into the office on her own. After many tests were run, she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. It came out of nowhere and it came quickly. She was transferred from her home in Bonita Springs to a hospital in Miami where they have a high risk pregnancy and oncology team that can work together, and if necessary, the best neonatal unit in the state. The treatment plan is an aggressive 24 hours a day infusion of chemo for 7 days, then four weeks of hospital recovery to allow for healthy blood cells to regenerate.

Elizabeth is only 33 years old and is 25 weeks pregnant with her first child, so this is a doubly shocking diagnosis for her and her baby. She doesn’t have any option but to start chemo immediately or she won’t be around for the baby, so unfortunately he has to go along for the treatment. The good news is that all of the baby’s organs were fully developed at 24 weeks. The doctors seem to be encouraging about his outcome in all of this and are following her case closely.

The immediate goal is for Elizabeth to complete one round of chemotherapy, and then be able to carry her son to term. After he is born, she may need a bone marrow transplant, but that will be determined later.

This happened very suddenly, and is devastating for her family who all live out of state and her boyfriend Frankie who lives two hours from Miami.  Any money donated will be used to help cover medical bills for Elizabeth and her baby, travel expenses, and living expenses while she is out of work.

Your generosity is very much appreciated, and will help alleviate some of the financial burden that has suddenly fallen upon this young family. Please continue to keep Elizabeth and her unborn son in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Elizabeth is at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL and will remain there through her recovery.
