Madonna, Butch, and Stephen are being evicted from their home. Within a week they could all be homeless.
Madonna is 77. Stephen 78. All three members of the family are disabled, and their income severely limits their ability to move on short notice, especially in a state with a drastic shortage of affordable housing.
They spent the next two months in the cold. In protest, they stopped paying rent. But state law demands tenants go through the courts to negotiate these issues, which can be a long and costly process.
DARE, Direct Action for Rights and Equality, and Signs of Providence are raising funds to help the family. Ideally, PSL will accept the funds and allow the Trottiers to stay until the end of their lease in May. If not, the funds will be used to help them pay for the move and security deposit on a new apartment.
It is clear that we need to change the laws that regularly allow these situations to occur. But first, we must help this family avoid homelessness.
