Kilimanjaro region, poverty support

Donation protected
Assisting impoverished farmers and communities adapt to climate change through education and specific projects.

In January 2016 Roger Croft and a group of friends are climbing Kilimanjaro in Africa.

Many people in the region have witnessed dramatic changes in their lifestyles due to Climate Change - our objective is to make a real difference to the lives of these people in practical ways.

To help realise our objective we have partnered with the Kilimanjaro Environmental Development Association - KEDA  who support poverty in the region through education and specific projects that help farmers and communities adapt to climate change.

In 2010 three graduates from the University of Sheffield conducted an eight week dissertation placement with KEDA, and have subsequently set up a UK charity called  Katapult Kilimanjaro.

This challenge is supporting 2 projects. Bee keeping,
where there are benefits of income from the honey, as well as improving pollination in the local area. In the above picture you can see the hives are supported. The trees are also painted with oil. This helps combat the  pests. There has been a reduction in the number of bees in the region, mainly due to an increase in pesticides. This is a small step to help redress the balance.

The second project is to support a tree planting programme. KEDA have an existing programme that can be further supported.

This involves researching and experimenting with different varieties of trees that can grow in the region. The benefit is a tree planting programme that can have more chances of success, both in terms of the trees growing, but also for the villages that can use the timber for building, or harvest fruit.

The Kilimanjaro challenge is taking place at the end of January and all the funds for the trip have been paid by the individuals who are doing the climb. All the funds raised will go to KEDA via Katapult Kilimanjaro. Indeed Renewable Living Ltd, Roger is MD of Renewable Living Ltd, are contributing £1000 towards the above 2 projects.

This challenge is to raise awareness of the effects of a changing climate, and to enable a local community to adapt to the challenges that they face.

As Roger Croft Says:

"These people are facing challenges that they previously did not face through no fault of their own. If their situation gets much worse they have fewer and fewer options on what to do next. The time to help them is now."

We look forward to your support.
