Our family dog Eenie has endured an awful couple of years suffering from a serious neurological disease called Syringomyelia. I first noticed something was wrong when he started to have sudden seizures and developed a significant head tilt last year. He became unusually aggressive to those he loved the most, and his seizures were frequent and terrifying - both for Eenie and our family.  Every time it happened, we thought it would be the last time we would see him. Concerned, I took him to a specialist neurologist for an MRI which revealed that he had excess fluid in his spinal cord and brain. That was when he was diagnosed with Syringomyelia (SM) and moderate hydrocephalus.

After a few months, the medication for SM was no longer working, and it became obvious that Eenie was in agony once again. After another visit to the neurologist in December, Eenie was admitted into an emergency surgery where he underwent a procedure to insert a Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt in his brain. The purpose of the tube was to drain the excess liquid and relieve the pressure inside his brain and spinal cord.

The surgery was a success, and Eenie seemed to be back to normal. Yet progress declined and Eenie’s legs were getting weaker, to the point where he could hardly walk. I took him back to the neurologist for a CT scan and to test whether his cerebrospinal fluid was infected. In January, Eenie was sent in for a second surgery, where a small haemorrhage was discovered. We later uncovered that this was the underlying cause for his disablement. After several months of rehab, he could finally walk and run on his own.

Things were going well for a month or so, until I noticed the SM symptoms slowly surfacing again. This was when I had to have the dreaded visit to the neurologist again, where he informed me that our journey wasn’t over. He uncovered that the shunt in his brain is blocked, and that he needs to perform a final surgery to unblock it and give him another chance at life.

To this date, Eenie’s veterinary costs have totalled approximately $12,000 and our family thought to turn to you for help.
