Edsall Family Medical Fund

$32,982 of $1,000 goal

Raised by 495 people in 14 months
Created August 19, 2017
Since the news of Mary Harper's diagnosis Wednesday, the response and outpouring of love and generosity has been tremendous. This campaign has been created as a way to support the Edsall family during this difficult season.

The following is the most recent update on Mary Harper's condition from the Edsall Family:

"Wednesday morning Dave and I noticed a large lump on the left side of MH stomach. We took her to the doctor to have them examine it. We thought it was a blockage or a hernia. She had an ultrasound and CT scan done that revealed a large tumor around her left kidney and several smaller ones in her lungs. We heard the news no parent wants to hear. "Your child has stage 4 cancer. A very rare kidney cancer. I am so sorry."

We have spent the last 24 hours having tests and labs completed at UNC hospital. We are heading home for one last "normal" weekend. We will return first thing Monday morning where MH will undergo an extensive surgery to remove the large tumor and left kidney. She will begin chemotherapy in the week following surgery. She will spend about a week in the hospital recovering. We will update on her recovery when we can. We appreciate all the thoughts and prayers."

Funds raised from this campaign will go directly towards the family's medical costs. Moving forward, as their needs grow and change, so will our financial goal. The Edsall family thanks you for your continued support.

"The entire Edsall family would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to everyone who has supported us over the past month. The gifts, donations, words, time, meals and everything else that everyone has done has been an immense help. This past few weeks have been incredibly difficult, but because of all of you, it has been manageable.

It would take us weeks to write individual thank you notes to everyone as there have been thousands of people who have helped us. Please know that everything has been received, noticed and very, very much appreciated.

Our dining room is packed with toys and gifts for Mary Harper and Allison (Allison is our almost 3 month old!). Mary Harper has loved all of her new toys, books, blankets, and puzzles! If further toys or gifts are to be sent, please consider donating them directly to UNC Children's Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC. Mary Harper spent 9 days there and played with many of the toys in the multiple playrooms they have for kids, which was a huge help while we were there.

Over the next 6 months, Mary Harper will be undergoing treatment once per week, and getting occasional scans to track her progress and adjust treatments if needed. It will likely be a tough road that will have a lot of uncertainty and lack of information all around, so please be patient with updates. As we get information in, we will distribute it through the Facebook page so everyone can be kept up to date. Hopefully, by March 2018, we will post an update about being done with treatment and beginning recovery!!

During chemotherapy treatment, a person’s immune system is weakened due to the medication. While treatment is going on, it will be important for Mary Harper’s health to be somewhat isolated from folks who are or may be sick, and her immune system will not be able to fight disease as well. As you can imagine, she won’t be able to go to preschool this year, and she will only be in public if necessary. Please keep this in mind so we can all work as a team to give Mary Harper the best chance to get better.

With all this said, the doctors are very positive with us regarding the cure rate of the disease, and Mary Harper’s chances of living a normal life after treatment. The next few months will be tough, but we hope to have the old Mary Harper back in no time at all. Thank you again to everyone, and remember to #FIGHTLIKEAPRINCESS!!!!!!!

Hello! The weeks following Mary Harper's surgical procedure have been eventful with lots of information to digest, treatments to begin and routines to put in place. Support continues to pour in for the family through cards, donations, meals, encouraging messages and prayers. The family remains so grateful for all of these things, and they have all truly helped Mary Harper continue to "fight like a princess"!

Mary Harper underwent her first chemotherapy appointment last week, and these will continue weekly until new scans are taken to monitor the response of her remaining tumors in about six weeks. She also received the first two out of six scheduled radiation treatments last week.

After her treatments, Mary Harper was able to spend her holiday weekend recuperating at home with family, where she improved daily! This week, she will be undergoing a second chemotherapy treatment as well as her final four radiation treatments.

Please continue to keep the Edsall family in your thoughts and prayers in the coming days and weeks as they work towards Mary Harper's continued healing and health!

Since Mary Harper's surgery, family and friends have been waiting to learn more about her official prognosis and treatment plan. At this time, Mary Harper has been officially diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer and is set to undergo both chemotherapy and radiation treatments in the near future. Below is the most recent update from the Edsall family from Friday:

"MH had her best day yet! She woke up in a perky mood and was quite playful. We went on a walk around the floor with the physical therapists. Dave and I took her on a walk later this afternoon, just the two of us. She helped us put a puzzle together. She's been cleared for a regular diet, so we are taking it slow. She's been so playful today. She's got all the nurses and doctors laughing.

Her prognosis probably won't be ready until Monday. The oncology team and surgeon team are discussing when to send us home. We might be able to go home for a few days before starting her first chemo and radiation treatment."

Again, thank you for your ongoing support, love and prayers!

Coley's latest update on sweet Mary Harper:

"She is out of surgery and doing perfectly! Dr. Lee, the surgeon, said the procedure could not have gone any better. They successfully placed her iv port and were able to remove the entire tumor, left kidney, and left adrenal gland. He was also able to take one of the tumors from her lungs to biopsy. She is sleeping soundly and seems to be quite comfortable.
We have loved all the pictures of everyone wearing pink and cannot wait to show MH when she wakes up. The amount of support everyone has shown for her and our family is incredible. We appreciate each and every one of you. ❤️

It has been an exhausting day for everyone. We are glad to have this part of this scary journey behind us. Now we wait for the biopsy results and the treatment plan.

Thanks again for all the love! #fightlikeaprincess

Love, Coley, Dave and MH
