Two local artists supported by the Ghent community have come together to launch its first ecological, sustainable, solar-powered, rainwater-catchment, bio-filtered water fountain for dogs.

The project started from an idea submitted through Citizen Artist Norfolk.  Harp and Garvin, creators of Citizen Artist Norfolk, solicited creative ideas to improve the city’s design and appeal and wanted to bring one idea to life.  "We saw a need that could combine our connection with the community, our commitment to sustainability and our love for animals. There are dog walkers everywhere in Ghent and a lot of thirsty dogs,” said Harp, who raised enough money from the community for materials to build the prototype on Colley Avenue. The project directs rainwater from a popular diner's roof into a container constructed with reclaimed and sustainable materials.  Ecodog’s planter system then purifies the water with the help of a solar-powered pump and a series of gravel filters, activated carbon, and the living roots of some beautiful plants.  Over four months Garvin and Harp  cast concrete molds, laid mosaic tiles, pulled apart pallets and constructed the first Ecodog.

The two artists have received a lot of kudos from their community, which is very concerned with local storm water and environmental issues regarding the Chesapeake Bay. The two would like to continue to develop and install their Ecodog projects, but need to secure money for the legalities of distributing their invention across a wider geography.

Your donation will help save the Chesapeake Bay, build sustainable communities, and give businesses and neighborhoods a functional work of art that keeps dogs on the run hydrated.

Every donation counts.   At $25.00, we only need to connect with 300 people who love dogs, the planet, art, or all three.  Any gesture of support is greatly appreciated.
