Nitrous Oxide for Homebirth

Northeast Indiana offers a wide variety of services for childbearing families - midwives, doulas, breastfeeding and postpartum support groups, many birth-related classes, babywearing and cloth diapering groups, a few birth centers, and a vibrant homebirth community. Yet with such numerous local opportunities, pregnant women still face very limited options for pain management in home setting. Many women feel they must abandon their desired homebirth plans because the hospital is currently the only location that offers effective pain relief methods, namely epidural anesthesia.

But what about mothers who want pain relief without giving up their homebirth plan, maintaining control and mobility and not exposing themselves and their babies to the risks of epidurals? Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, provides safe, effective relief of pain and anxiety. Nitrous oxide has been routinely used worldwide for laboring women, but was less common in the United States until recently. Its low-cost, safety, and ease of use is attracting interest in the US once again, including at nearby Goshen Birth Center. This exciting opportunity at the birth center got us thinking: what about our local homebirthing mothers?

We are THRILLED to announce that Earthern Vessels Midwifery Service LLC plans to begin offering nitrous oxide as soon as possible. This analgesic can be used by a laboring mother in the comfort of her own home, and even in a waterbirth.
