My mother, Conella, recently suffered a major stroke in April. She has worked very hard to rehabilitate her left side, which was completely paralized at the onset of the stroke. My mother was in and out of the hospital throughout her rehabilitation.
She did very well, and was able to go home with minimal home health care and outpatient rehab at home. She was released to drive and be completely independent in June. She has been doing well, and continued to do her excercises on her own to get stronger after therapy stopped.

Unfortunately, my mother had a very serious motor vehicle accident July 29th. Conella is in dire need of support. She had the minimal amount of coverage on her car and only the standard PIP for Florida. She was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital as a truama patient, and had emergency surgery to repair a limb threatening open fracture of her good right arm. She also suffered a small subarachnoid bleed, a right tibial plateau fracture, right patella fracture, broken ribs, a nasty laceration on her right lower leg, and several bruises, not to mention whip lash. Her leg is non operable at this time, and is in an immobilizer. Her arm is also immobilized in a splint. Her left side, her stroke side is still weak. My mother is expected to have a very long recovery requiring long-term skilled nursing and rehab upto 3 months. Her medicare will only cover so much, and then she is required to pay a copayment to stay in a facility. Not to mention she will no longer have personal transportation when she eventually returns home.
Unfortunately, my mom's animals are also in need of help during this time. Her apartment is in Bradenton, and I live in Venice. I am doing everything I can to help her in every possible way, however I do not have the financial means for all the extra expenses accrued for the cost of the tow and storage fees for the car-which were not covered by her auto policy (Over $450). In addition, I have had to go to Bradenton several times to get her animals, personal items, etc... costing over $120 in gas already. My mother is a veteran, but unfortunately the VA only covers so much, and then she is responsible for the rest. She is retired and lives in low income housing and solely off her SSI monthly income. I need help to make sure my mother can continue her care and return to her independence eventually. I am personally unable to take care of her, as I work full time, take care of my husband, who is also disabled, and attend nursing school. My plate is full, and I need help to take care of her. Any amount of help is appreciated, and will go directly to my mother's care as well as her animals. Thank you in advance! - Crystal Wallace (Conella's daughter)

A lot has happened since my last update! Unfortunately, my mom got a DVT in her immobilized leg, and a piece broke off and went to her lung, resulting in a pulmonary embolism. She was taken by ambulance back to Sarasota Memorial Hospital and treated for the PE. This was life threatening to her once again. She spent a week in the hospital! She lost her bed at the skilled nursing facility. I had to give up her apartment and break the lease, in order to help pay for her care. She is basically homeless now. She was discharged to Health South Acute Rehab Hospital. She was starting to make progress with weight bearing status on her right leg as tolerated. I was so proud when she told me she could walk for the first time since the accident! Friday, she went to see her surgeon. It is hard on her to travel anywhere. The wheelchair transport has to take her. When the doctor cut the cast off, he found a large infected wound where her bone had originally broke through the skin. He called me right away and admitted her by ambulance to Doctors Hospital ER. She was admitted and taken to the OR for a debridement and wash out of the wound. She was a high risk patient...but she did well thankfully! The infection was not in the bone and the surgeon did not have to take the hardware out! She now has a long term PICC line for antibiotics. She will be on antibiotics at least 6 weeks. Thankfully, she will be able to return to Health South at discharge. Medicare will only pay for her to spend 20 days at the rehab. Then they expect her to go to an Assisted living facility. I have found one that will be good for her, but unfortunately it is not covered 100% with Medicaid, her VA Benefits, and her SSI. Medicare will continue to cover her with out patient therapy at the ALF. She cannot be alone and needs assistance at least until next summer. Any money that can be donated to help her get the care she needs at the ALF is greatly appreciated! In addition, there was a week gap between Medicare coverage and the Medicaid retrospective pick up, and was charged to her at the private pay rate. I am struggling trying to save her personal things and take care of her dog. I have been advocating for my mother throughout all of this. I am doing as much as one person can possibly do and more! I need help to help my mom. Please help us get through this tough time. Thank you!

My mom is safe at the rehab/nursing home she has been at. The building is a hurricane building and they do not evacuate. I stopped by to see her on my way to my shelter. Conella is calm and taking all of this seriously, but also has a strong faith. She is still immobilized on the right side of her body. Lori and I got her a coloring book to help her gain more control over her left hand. She is doing great! Medicare stopped covering her the last week of August. I have applied for Medicaid for her. I have also been forced to break the lease on her apartment. My sister, Lori came down from Georgia, and some of our local family came together to pack up and move Conella's belongings and are storing them. We are supposed to follow-up with the surgeon on the 19th of this month. My mom is very grateful to everyone who has been helping her. I am humbled by the outpouring of support and love for my mother. Thank you!♡

Tuesday my mom, Conella returned to the surgeon's office for another follow up on her arm and leg. The x-rays show the leg is healing, but will be immobilized the entire 3 months for sure. We took the splint off her arm, and removed the staples. She had a very difficult time, as the staples were grown in the skin of the incisions. I was able to help, and then we applied a hard fiberglass cast to her arm. She was tough. We got through that day! Today she was moved to another room in the rehab. We were able to get her on a unit where she will have more assistance available. She is making very small improvements everyday.

Earlier this week, I took my mom's dog Charis to see her in the rehab. He was really happy to see her! She was relieved to finally see him too! I groomed him just the day before...that was my first time grooming a little dog, lol!! Took me 2 hours! We had a nice visit. Charis seemed to relax more when we took him back home to our house. That was the first time he had seen her since before accident on July 29th. Pet therapy is the best♡♡
They were so happy to see each other!
Charis had the biggest smile on his face
He kept rolling on the bed next to her♡
