What is a learning Center ?

A learning center is a place to provide favorable environment for children to enhance the capacity of learning. It aims to provide tutoring for all grades students by qualified teachers in an adapted environment. It mainly offers help and support for homework after day class and provide extra activities classes like song, dance, gaming, and to build confidence-on communication skill of the children. A learning center is also a place where the elders and older generation of of the community will be taught basic education and use of modern technology. what we seek to create is a community center in this learning center where the children who lack even basic educational ill taught by government school in the villages will be provided a proper platform  so they can reach more than what basic education in village school provide and dream of becoming doctors ,engineers etc.  we also aim to educate the elders of the community about the  modern area and its teleology and learn about modern agricultural methods and technologies.

Methodologies

Our projects are created after long research on Saldum village and other local  community using several methodologies like pilot test, interview, group discussion by our field staff under the supervision of local community  and other educational experts to find out the exact requirement of people. After data collection then data had been analyzed by our expert. Then we planned to conduct child centered education system where children would be allowed to learn on their own pace and level which fosters critical thinking and problem solving skills among students and role of teachers would be limited as facilitator who counsels and motivates students according to situation. Then we appoint special expert and trainer of different field to train these community people. Likewise, we have managed volunteering packages for building learning center structure, teaching English, health, environment, and many more under the supervision expert of related field to meet the requirements of local people.

    Saldum village profile :-

On the Base of Ganesh  Himal(Mountain) at the Hill of Ganga-Jumuna (The Twin Waterfall) by the side of Akhu river  is Saldum Village, ward no 4, Ganga-Jumuna Rular Muncipality,Dhading Dristict, Province 3, Nepal.  The area of the Ganga-Jumuna  Rular Muncipality village large and covers a area of more than 10 Square mile in hilly terrain and has a population around 10000 plus but the village we are concentrating on is saldum village. It is small village but full of agricultural land and a population of around 150 with more than 50 house spread over the terrace rice fields. The rainy season june-july- August is the main agricultural season with the major rain fall during this period. So if we are lucky we will also do the rice planting in the terrace field with the villagers  . The Village is situated at the altitude of 1100 meters above the sea level but has a easy hidden access to Major trekking trail like Langtang(7234 meters) national park and Manslau (8156 Meter) Conservation Area. It is also now the beginning and ending point of the Ruby Valley cultural trek and Ganesh Himal trek. The village is also situated at the base of the holy twin waterfalls Ganga-Jumuna which has one of the most amazing eagle eye views of the Himalayas from Langtang to Ganesh himal to Mansalu to Annapurna and more depending in the visibility. The village is also in one side bordered by the flowing crystal mountain river Akhu famous for its cold water mountain trout found in the river and the small scale hydro electricity dam and lake.   The village has one elementary school and two basic shops with very basic products needs for the villagers. There are some small village restaurants shops and police station both uphill and downhill in small village town’s minim of hour walk. This village also has a very famous temple & is only visited once twice a year to organize a special ceremony by the village people for their local gods. There is off-road access to the village which is seasonal . You can reach the village by a 4 hour paved road drive then 7 hours off road drive and a half a hour walk depending on the road conditions.

How to get to the village ?

Saldum village being even so near to the capital of Nepal Kathmandu around 130 KM is not easily accessible but we intend to make it for the scout volunteer group. The journey begins in landing at Trivbhwan international airport in Kathmandu. Upon landing you will have to go through immigration and you will need to fill an arrival card with your passport information and your intention in Nepal ( please get a tourist visa easiest and available upon arrival) and also your address of stay in Nepal which will be Nagarjun HomeStay, House no 183, Gyan-joity Marga, Vanasthali , Katmandu, Nepal. Upon getting your visa and luggage you will met by Samjhana (Sam) & Shreejan in the airport Gate . Samjhana is your project coordinator and shreejan is the local coordinator for the village. They will be helping you through out the project in everything you need. Afterwards we will drive to Nagarjun Homestay in kathmandu. You can book Nagarjun Homestay from booking.com and it will be our home base for the next two days while we prepare to leave for the mountains and get all our gear and explore Kathmandu a little. After wards we will leave early morning 6 am to get to Dandling Besi (Capital of Dhading District) . Dhading Besi is around 90 km from kathmandu. We will travel there by public bus. After we reach there and will take lunch in a local resturant and prepare the off road drive of our life. Depending on road conditions and how much materials we are carrying along for the project we will either reserve a local bus or jeep and drive 7 to 8 hours to our destination village and afterwards walk half and hour to an volunteer house which is our base of operations in saldum Village.
PS:- Due to road condition during the rainy season(june/july/August) we might have to walk from couple of hours to minum of a day to get to our project location.

what the scout and other volunteer need to bring  for themselves during the stay in the project ?

The scout team will be provide three meals a days with three cup of tea a day during meal time. The meals will be cooked with what is grown in the volunteer house filed  like rice, corn , lentils , beans, spinach and other veggies. Deepening on conditions the volunteer house also has a buffalo and cow so fresh  milk might be available.   Also fresh clean water from the mountain stream will be provide and also a kitchen to boil the water and do some basic cooking.  The meals will be mostly vegetarian and Nepalese and once a week a little western mix . There is no butcher in the village but chicken and goat are easily available and once a week usually  the villagers get fresh meat by co-operating on a butchering of animals so fresh meat might be available and when available will be provided for the volunteers. There is only two shops in the village with non or very less western  products so we ask the volunteer to bring every thing they need for the next three weeks stay in the project  from tooth paste to toilet paper to sweets to medication to ever thing you might need.

We would advise the scout to bring rain jackets and  clothes for personal use as well as a good sleeping bag and mattress for your own self.  We will provide Nepalese room with bedding and blanket but there is no central heating in whole of Nepal so sleeping bag was recommended if you don’t have one, you could rent one in a dollar Kathmandu or buy a cheap Chinese copy here in Nepal.

We would ask volunteer to bring basic first-aid kit and medication for themselves as nearest decent hospital is  a hour helicopter ride away and we also recommend the volunteer to check their travel insurance about what is covered just in case something happens. We also recommend the volunteers to do a online registration with your  embassy to let them you are in Nepal and working on this project.

We will ask the volunteer to bring  power back up for your services and also inform their parents and friends and family  about where they are going and they might be out of touch as the mobile network in unreliable as well as the power supply but the project coordinator will have a satellite  phone for emergency.

We will also like to ask the volunteer to  safety gears  like construction helmet and construction jackets and others requires as the safety equipment found in Nepal are of low quality.

Scout Team what they do during their spare time after the completion of the project.
