Please help me continue to support my family!
On May 9, 2011 my sister had a massive stroke that left her permanently disabled. Lisa and her son Vittorio (17) live in a tiny apartment in Seaside, CA and receive only $500 per month (cash aid) and food stamps. Unfortunately, the responsibility has fallen on me to cover all expenses above and beyond this amount since. My sister has been denied Social Security Disability multiple times and, though we are appealing the latest unfavorable decision (April/2014), will not even be considered again for 12-18 months. My sister has numerous physical and mental issues and has severe short-term memory and hearing loss. She can no longer operate a vehicle. She can no longer hold down a job. Her medical care has been inadequate. I have worked tirelessly to ensure they have the bare necessities covered ($745 per month/rent, PG&E, phone, internet, toiletries/hygiene products, etc.) but my savings have now been depleted (over $12,000). I also live three hours away from Lisa, so managing all of this has been a logistical nightmare. The journey has been a long and arduous one, to say the least.
This year has been especially challenging. My father passed away in January. My niece (Lisa's daughter) had a full-term stillborn baby in April. My beloved dog lost her battle with heart disease in August. One week later, the 6.0 Napa Earthquake happened. I am wounded and tired but strong.
