Help Save Odin!

Good evening my friends. I have an update on the coolest ginger I know and it is a bit heavy. I can barely sit and type this out without my hands shaking, so bear with me. Odin, prior to us adopting him on May 31, just barely two weeks ago, had been in the care of the Humane Society from at least the beginning of April until the day he reached out to me for some love from the tiny prison he was in. Odin is the kind of cat that cat lovers dream of, no really, he is! He is a gorgeous ginger fluff, is affectionate, playful and ready for cuddles at any time especially with children! He LOVES Lydia with his whole glorious heart! When I say that he reached out to me, I am not exaggerating. He stretched his front paws out through the cage as far as he could get his arms through the bars that separated us from each other to get my attention. Right then and there, he was family and I had to get him out. The only thing we knew about him was that he was affectionate, ginger and had a super cool squinty eye and honestly, that is all we needed to know. Fast forward two days. I noticed he had worms and needed to be wormed again despite him being with the HUMANE SOCIETY for two full months. He had paperwork that said he was wormed so I thought it was weird. I have had ten cats over the last twenty years and know that relapses can and do happen, but he was under the care of an organization that is supposed to keep up on those issues. How long he had them, I have no idea, so I went to Pet Smart where he was adopted from during adopt a pet month to let them know what was up and they comped me worming medicine. They were unsettled that we had adopted a cat with worms btw. The manager was irked for Odin and us, his new family. I thought, "Okay, a mistake was made, no big deal. I can handle that" and he seemed okay the day after the treatment, but something still seemed just a little off. We noticed he had a slight limp when he walked and did not want to jump onto things if he could help it not even to get the snuggles he desperately desired! Then I noticed that he was crying as he used the litter box as in actually crying out. None of that was right so I called the closest vet, figuratively right around the corner from me, and got him in to be seen on Wednesday where his new vet, concerned at what he was seeing, informed me that it was a current and persistent issue and he wanted to take X-rays. What he found was alarming. He had to have suffered being hit by a vehicle! His femur was broken right where the hip joint is and he had been hobbling around ever since then in pure agony! His vet and all the vet technicians were all taken aback over this and were upfront about what needed to be done and that to do nothing for him would be devastating for him and our family. The fact that nothing had been done to help him before he was put up for adoption is unconscionable and reprehensible especially since the name of the Organization is called, the HUMANE SOCIETY! If they were unable to afford to help him how he needed, the kindest and albeit saddest thing to do was would be to give him permanent peace. The look on his vets face as we discussed possible treatments available to Odin could fill volumes about animal neglect, injuries, and unforgettable abuses that he was forever addressing whenever he could and he really wanted to help us no matter what treatment we chose for Odin. It only took a second for me to think about what was best for him and our family and I scheduled Odin's surgery for the following Tuesday. It was actually a unanimous family decision. All it took for my better half to agree to spend over a $1000 on a cat was hearing that he was in agony from a broken bone. He said, "Just schedule it and we will figure it out!" It was the soonest they could help him and we were given pain meds to try and keep him sedentary until the day of the surgery. LOL... that little dropper of magic gave Odin a freedom he had not known for far too long! He played and made friends with Apollo, our 2-year-old boy kitty that was also a rescue as fast as he could! Apollo had never known what it was like to be real friends with another cat or to have a brother and Odin gave him that! They shared several meals together in complete harmony. Surgery day came, he was operated on and then all seemed well until last night. He was lethargic, unwilling to drink water, and his sutures looked off to me. I immediately took him into Southern Oregon Veterinary Specialty Hospital to make sure he was okay. He was not okay and it was not something I could do for him at home so he was admitted to the veterinary hospital for the night so they could give him the care he needs. SOVSH and his regular vet thanked me for investing in his life and for giving him the best chance he can be given. As of right now, Odin is very sick, but still so gracious and loving despite all the poking and prodding he has and is continuing to endure. He needs a broad spectrum antibiotic to fight this aggressive infection and they are testing his blood panels to see what else is going on. The update I just got while typing his story out made me feel raw and angry towards the Humane Society for severely lacking in the care they gave to an animal in need that they hoped would be adopted. I will never regret giving him a home where he has been lavished in love and attention like all furkids should know, but to know that he has suffered unnecessarily in agony for who knows how long despite being under the care of the Humane Society is enraging. Please keep this ginger fluff of love in your thoughts and if you feel moved to donate to his veterinary funds, please let me know. Anything would be appreciated. When all is said and done no matter the outcome, we will have invested nearly $2500 in his comfort and peace of mind and I am so thankful that we just happened to need rat bedding for our rescued rats. Had we not rescued those three little ladies just weeks before, we would have never met Odin, the squinty-eyed fluff of pure love.

All funds donated will go to his vet bills and anything left over will be donated to the vet hospitals so that they can help other furkids in need and the humans they chose too!
