On Sunday afternoon, our friends, Pat and Sandy Streng' son, Dylan Gary was involved in a horrific traffic accident on the corner of Monroe & Eastman Roads in Midland.  The first responders arrived on scene and it took them over 20 minutes to extract Dylan from the car using the jaws of life.  He was immediately transported to Midland Hospital, where they assessed his condition. Due to the severity of his injuries they then transferred him, via ambulance, to U of M for more intensive treatment .

Dylan suffered  2 collapsed lungs, several broken ribs, broken pelvis, lacerations to his spleen & lungs and a very severe head injury. He is currently at University of Michigan, Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI.  He is on a ventilator, and has tubes in place to drain the excess fluid and keep his lungs inflated. They're reducing the sedation every hour to assess his abilities.

Please consider donating to Dylan's Recovery Fund  to help cover miscellaneous expenses not covered by insurance.

2/4/2019 update: Doctors removed the breathing tube, and Dylan is breathing on his own, with oxygen. He is in a lot of pain, but he is sedated and resting now.

2/5 morning update: Dylan took a slight downturn, his monitors showed critical-low oxygen levels, last night, his oxygen level fell to low 80s and into 70s. Nurses reacted immediately and  were able to suction out enough fluid to get him back up breathing, but then his levels fell again around 12:30. The doctors were able to stabilize him, and then, sedated him, so he could rest .  His lung capacity on his right side has diminished since yesterday morning.  God is Good and Merciful! Keep praying for our Dylan!

Sat night: Dylan spiked a fever again but seems to be controlled now with Tylenol. Made some great progress today with the pain meds & even better communication. He’s still very confused but we were quizzing him by asking who sung check yes or no & he said “George Straight”. Then asked him who Tom Brady played for and he said “Patriots...that was stupid” . They are talking about taking the right chest tube out tomorrow or Monday. Another chest X-ray in the morning. It’s gonna to be a long road but all the prayers are working!!

Sat afternoon: happy to report a little progress this afternoon. His 2nd culture is showing no signs of infection in almost 24 hours. They’ll continue the antibiotics for 14 days. Cutting back on the meds has increased communications & signs of both short term & long term memory!!! ❤️. Thanking God for each little step in the right direction!! Would also like to thank everyone who’s continuing to pray for our Superhero!! We’ve gotten messages from so many people.. many reaching out with their stories of hope ❤️

Sat morning: had a restful night & working with the docs on adjusting the meds do that he can communicate better. No much change yet. Dylan is still very strong & fighting be kept in bed a bit, but very confused. Please keep praying for him!!

Fri evening: Had another issue this afternoon where the right chest tube broke open . They fixed it but yet another setback as there’s more air pockets & found some clotty tissue. Praying they can get it back under control but won’t know for 24 hours or so. Seems we are having x-rays 3x a day. He did have a few wins today, he was communicating some with words & the left lung that had an air pocket seems to be decreasing in size so they shouldn’t have to put a smaller tube back in . He’s settled down now for the evening so pray he gets some rest! Tomorrow’s a new day, looking forward to more progress. Appreciate all of the love, support & prayers ❤️

Fri noon: Dylan spiked a fever late yesterday so they took cultures & started him on 2 antibiotics last night. They also gave him ceraqill to help the restlessness & also works as a sleep ad. He only woke twice & mostly because they were taking xrays and had to lay him flat on his back. Cultures came back & has a staff infection . They are adding another antibiotic but should be ok. They are backing off some of the pain meds so we can hopefully communicate with him. We just had a breakthrough where he counted backwards from 10 with me to ease the pain & calm down . Please keep praying for our Superhero ❤️. Thanking God for how far he’s already brought him

Thur pm: several ups & downs today as they sedated him in order to get the feeding tube in and the left chest tube removed. The hardest part is the little communication Dylan was doing took 1 or 2 steps backwards . They are working on the right balance of pain meds.. just frustrating & scary. He couldn’t really open his eyes today but definitely understanding what we’re saying. I received a message today from someone that was first on the scene. She and 2 other ladies worked to keep Dylan conscious and breathing until the Paramedics arrived . Needless to say, the tears poured out once again . Thank you Kelli Wagner and all of the people that were there Sunday afternoon to save our Superhero. Please keep the prayers coming!! ❤️

Thurs am: wish I had better progress to report. Another rough night for our Superhero. Dylan’s having a lot of coughing & drawing out the flem is not fun. I’m sure glad he won’t remember any of this because it’s heart wrenching on this Momma & it’s the only thing that’s keeping me sane is knowing he’ll never remember it . They are supposed to take out the left chest tube today & put in the feeding tube .. hopefully it all goes as planned. On a better, little humorous note, around 7:30 last night when the sitter & Respiratory nurse both came in, the “gingers” outnumbered the people in the room 4 to 3. We continued with ginger talk for 20 mins & I’m sure Dylan could hear & was smiling on the inside . An evening visit from Steve, Tracy & Jenna helped ease the stress of the day & we both got a little more sleep between the ups & downs of the night. Pat’s actually still sleeping . Again, appreciate all of the continued prayers & support ❤️

A small setback this afternoon when Dylan’s oxygen levels wouldn’t allow him portable oxygen to the MRI unit. He was already almost sedated so they tried the feeding tube with no luck. Brought me to tears listening to him screaming & nothing I could do . They will try the tube later tonight & wait on the MRI until he is stronger. Please, please continue to thank God & pray for him!

Today another step forward in this road we’re on. Last night was a little rough as he seems to be aggravated by all the tubes & not being able to move much. Had to put a glove on him so every time he reached to pull out his oxygen he’s punched himself in the nose . They are doing an MRI & putting a feeding tube in around 4 then hope to get his neck brace off or at least a tolerable one put on. Changing up meds again. Hopefully he’ll start becoming more coherent and able to communicate. Lots of pain & breaks my heart but he is tough kid & will get thru this! Keep the prayers coming ❤️

One step back last night meant 2 steps forward today . He’s been trying to say I love you & said “Mom, I love you" and he lifted his arm & pulled me in for hug with both arms . They took another chest X-ray this afternoon and the diminished lung is back on track. They're continuing to lower his oxygen take also. He keeps motioning to brush his teeth and the 2nd time he grabbed the toothbrush from the nurse & did it himself . The afternoon progressed with a lil better communications. He's opened his eyes a bit today but says he can't see. Think it's just blurry from the meds & such but will know more tomorrow. He's complaining of his neck hurting , & wants the brace off but they are coming tomorrow to assess & do an MRI. Please continue to pray & we are all thanking God for saving him!! ❤️

Tues morning update: a bit of a setback last night. His oxygen was low 80s & even in the 70’s. Almost had to put the vent back on. Fortunately they were able to suction out enough to get him back up but then happened again about 12:30. They sedated him with dexmed and he’s been stable since. His lung capacity on his right side is diminished since yesterday morning-that’s the side with the broken ribs. Hopefully better news as the day progresses.

Another update: they just took his vent out & he’s breathing on his own with a little oxygen. He’s in a lot of pain.. heartbreaking but they gave him morphine & he’s out again. I am so thankful for so many people praying for him! God is good ❤️

Here’s an update on our son Dylan. He was in an accident on Monroe & Eastman where he ran a blinking red light (not sure why it was blinking at 2:30 in the afternoon or why he ran it). It took them 20 mins with the jaws of life to get him out of the car. He was in Midland hospital then transferred to U of M. He has 2 collapsed lungs 2-3 broken ribs, a broken pelvis, lacerations to this spleen & lungs and a very severe head injury. He is on a vent in ICU at Mott (U of M’s children’s hospital) He also has tubes in to drain the blood & keep his lungs inflated. They are reducing the sedation every hour to check for a response like squeezing the hand. He’s moving his limbs but no squeezing yet. Please keep praying for him, we need God’s help to get him thru this ❤️
