My name is Amber Chapman, I have been blessed to see 27 years of life. However, the majority of those years have been a medical, health and financial struggle for me and my family. At age 7, I was diagnosed with Autoimmune Hepatitis. The doctors predicted as a result of my condition, I would require a liver transplant in 10 years (from the time of diagnosis). Right on schedule, my liver began to deteriorate by age 17. By age 18, I was on a liver transplant list.
I tried to never be "defined" by my illness. Friends from school often remark that they never knew I had a health condition, let alone life-threatening. I was able to finish school and remain employed full-time at William Beaumont Hospital, until August 2016. I have exhausted any savings and I receive $633 per month in Social Security Disability. Of which 90% goes toward my housing, cell phone and car payment.
I have been surrounded and supported by amazing family and friends. My strength comes from my three F's: Family, Friends, and most of all my Faith - Hebrews 11:1.
My health is declining rapidly and it is now urgent that I undergo a risky, but necessary procedure that will keep me eligible for transplantation -when a liver becomes available. This is where your support comes in. For the sake of time, the doctors have asked that we try to find a living donor. That process is now underway but the living donor, myself and a family member to assist me, will have to travel from Detroit, Michigan to University of Illinois, Chicago (UIC) in Illinois. Over the years my family and friends have given abundantly, I couldn't ask for more. This is why I am going public to ask for help with travel and related expenses to and from UIC. I will require at least one relative with me for an indefinite amount of time. All funds will be used for ongoing medical and transportation expenses.
