If you didn’t know, now you know. Monks ball hard. Some say Nomads ball harder.
On September 1st, I am journeying half way across the world to find out for myself, and capture a story of traditions, centuries in the making, grappling with changes of the modern world. The common language: basketball.
At a cement court, 10,500ft high on the Tibetan Plateau, 60 teams from surrounding clans and monasteries are gathering for a sport they only recently discovered. In a unique showdown of diametric communities, top Tibetan Nomad and Buddhist Monk teams will battle in a tournament against foreigners.
The twist…I was invited to play on the women’s foreign team.

I might be short, but my grandmother is 4’8” and she was the captain of her basketball team in the 40s. It’s all in the genes.
With this money raised, you are soon to see me slamming dunks with monks. This money will cover the substantial cost of airfare and travel expenses, as well as the media gear needed to make this all possible. Over the past couple weeks since starting this fund, the project has grown, and I have had to raise the amount in order to hire a filmmaker to join me.
Any small bit is a huge contribution and appreciated from the bottom of my heart. Not only would this help me follow my passion for shedding light on otherwise unknown stories - but it would also be benefiting a remote community that has harnessed the power of Internet and sports to change their lives. Advertising and selling handmade yak clothing online has ignited a growing textile industry to fuel the remote economy. Former nomads can now earn a stable living without working 20+ hours a day in the field. Furthermore, these basketball tournaments can be organized bringing unlikely clans together in the universal enjoyment of sport.
