Help Kozefò Build a School in Haiti
As A New Arrival Center primary school grows, the space in our current school building is becoming increasingly limited. With 100 of our 124 students in 7 rooftop classrooms, the building cannot sustain our growing size. So, it's time for something new!
Our team is working diligently to connect with local engineers, construction workers, and resources as we roll out this project. We will be updating progress on this massive project with all of our supporters every step along the journey. Check out our website to learn more about this project.
With the help of our administrative team, teachers, and parents, we have located property near our current school site. Our team is completing the land assessment and legal paperwork to make this our future home. The plan is to set up temporary structures to start school in September 2018.
For now, we're focusing on Phase 1...
It is important to us that we remain in the same neighborhood as our current location, where many of our students live. We’ve found property that is perfect for our new school campus. Temporary classrooms and a kitchen will be built until funds are raised for phases two and three.
Phase 2: Design & Plan
Phase 3: Build & Educate
In total, we’re estimating that this project will cost around $800,000 from start to finish.
100% of your tax-refundable donation will go toward funding the building project. With your financial support, we can give our students the safe and inspecting learning environment that they do deserve.
As you can imagine, we're learning a ton about Haitian real estate in this process. There is so much to consider when considering where to buy... How far from the main road is it? Is it accessible via car or motorcycle? Does it already have a perimeter wall (these are surprisingly extremely expensive to install)? Can we work around the existing trees and vegetation, or do we need to do any removal? How far is it from where the majority of our students currently live? Is there or could there be access to water? Is the land in a good spot to eventually set up internet? How many people own the land? Does the landowner(s) have their paperwork?
We are so thankful for the $40,000 that has already been donated to this project. To purchase this plot of land we have our eye on, we are in need of an additional $125,000. Any donation, big or small, will help us get to our goal for Phase 1!
The rented space currently provides education to 124 students across grades 1-8, with plans to continue adding classes to be a school for grades 1-12. They have overgrown their space and recently lost three outdoor classrooms to the landlord's request and now house 100+ students in rooftop classrooms.
Please dream with us as we gather funding to build this new school for our students. Kozefò (meaning to Speak Loud in Creole - as they speak out against the injustice of a lack of education for many young Haitians) is the supporter of this school, providing financial support, teacher seminars, and encouragement to staff and students along the way.
