The Dream Center Vision

Dream Center is a center for education located in the Highlands area of Livingstone, Zambia. It was built to cater to the need of children within the area surrounding the Sunbird Guest House, where volunteer teachers, construction workers, medical professionals and those who care for the elderly are housed. These volunteers, who walk on average around 4 kilometers to their placements everyday, recognized the need for our neighbor’s children to attend school; many stayed at home all day to help around the house or care for younger siblings while their parents went to work. Through collective effort of Dream Livingstone, outside donations, volunteers of Dream Livingstone and the community of Dream Livingstone the Dream Center was constructed.

Years later, the school has more than 100 students ranging from age 2-16 who are getting the chance to receive a proper education, something that was not possible for them up until recently.  The volunteers and workers have built one building that contains 3 small classrooms, where older children work, as well as 2 small storage rooms for teaching and building supplies. They have also constructed a covered shelter that is used for preschool. The school has two teachers; one, who teaches the older children and the other, who is a mother to one of the children and is in charge of the preschool. Other teachers are volunteers of Dream Livingstone who come sporadically throughout the year to donate their time, knowledge and resources.

Work continues on this site by those associated with Dream Livingstone. Volunteer construction workers are currently working on the foundation of another building and volunteer teachers work in the classroom with the children to improve their education. The vision for this school now is to improve upon the hard work done by those before us. The goals in the coming months are as follows.

·      Dream Livingstone has a goal to give each student there a uniform by next term, something that most schools require in the area. The uniform costs $11 per child. Dream Livingstone has already bought the first 30 but 100 more are needed.

·      The children currently sit on the cement floor. Our organization would like to be able to give the children chairs to sit on throughout the school day.

·      Provide supplies. These children do not have the means to buy pencils, notebooks, etc. and they are provided by this organization. Any funds leftover after reaching the prior goals will go to providing a more enriching classroom experience by purchasing more supplies.

The overall mission is to teach these children that education is truly the only way out of poverty. Through the use of learning skills like reading and writing English properly, we have the ability to make a better life for the youth in Livingstone and for generations to come. Any donation is accepted, greatly appreciated and utilized to the fullest extent by our experienced team of staff of Dream Livingstone. Our organization cares deeply about this community and wishes to help it become more sustainable and independent as it grows.
