My name is Drake Hoffmeister and I’m a 17-year-old bass vocalist and I have been selected to sing at a summer camp in Los Angeles called A Cappella Academy. Admission has been a dream of mind ever since I stepped into the world of A Cappella and I’ve had that seemingly impossible dream miraculously come true. Ever since I was very little I was in love with music. I turned to a world of art and creativity and would constantly be found in the basement on my family’s computer watching and listening to music videos and musical cover videos. I was fascinated by music and thought it to be a “god-like” craft that I would never be able to imitate. But that never stopped me from trying. I would find loving music in my later years even more as a world that I could run off to-to escape the troubles of growing up (most of which we all face). Freshman year I found myself loving the science of music after taking an AP music theory course and it was then that I knew I wanted to explore & perform music for a living.
Music is something that I love and have always been able to turn to in my darkest times. I also find that music is a form of communication that transcends language. Movie scores and jazz music are direct examples of this as many composers/artists use it to signal motifs for certain characters or foreshadow events or emphasize those events so that the audience better understands the characters and their conflict- internal or external.
I want to be able to speak to people in that way. I’ve spent my life loving and practicing music and singing in a choir for the first time was a life changing experience- “it was like turning on a light switch; “Suddenly my world went from black and white to color”, as Eric Whitacre so brilliantly describes it. I’ve conquered many personal milestones in music among many other milestones I have yet to face. A Cappella Academy is my next stepping stone in lifetime of challenges and I turn to you to help me face it so that I may aspire to make my contribution to the world of A Cappella and music in the not-so far off future.
