UBWFC Tough Mudder

Donation protected

On October 26th, 12 members of the University of Bristol Women's Football Club (UBWFC) will be raising money for our club by crawling face down in the mud, getting electrocuted and generally dragging each other over really tall things for 12 miles as part of Tough Mudder. We're not an official charity, so we've created this 'Go fund me' page. Anything you can spare, from 10p to the full £1000 would make a massive, massive difference to us, so thank you! And even if you can't spare any money, we'd appreciate it if you had a quick skim/share of this page.

Who are we?

UBWFC is composed of two teams and over 40 members. Our first team have played the last two seasons in the Southern Premier of BUCS, a huge achievement as we were the only team in the league not to offer PE as a uni subject. We survived the first season, playing against teams which included players like Arsenal & England Internationals Jordan Nobbs and Danielle Carter. But despite the highlights of last season, such as meeting Kelly Smith (who manages Hertfordshire uni)...

...scenes like this became more common in the face of unreal opposition:

So this season we're looking forward to being able to play our football again and challenge teams in the Western 1A. In the near future we also hope to be able to field a second team in BUCs, so that newcomers to the sport get the opportunity to play competitive football. This looks amazingly promising after the second team played their first ever Varsity game against UWE in March, which then became their first ever Varsity win!

Why are we willing to do this for your donations?

Unfortunately, despite the amazing culture we've created at this club, after a recent review the uni have decided that women and men's football should no longer be classified as focus sports (for an explanation of what a focus sport is and what sports are covered, see: http://www.bris.ac.uk/sport/high-performance/focus-sports/). What this decision, preceding the world cup, means for us is that our funding has been cut, we no longer have a coach/manager, and are training on half of a sand-based hockey pitch. This has also put a sad slowing to the development of our second team, as you have to be able to partially fund a first season in BUCs, which we now cannot afford. Unless we can raise the money another way; which is why we are doing Tough Mudder.

Last season to play sport at Bristol University, you had to be able to afford a £630 sports pass for the three years. On top of this, you pay £20 to the student's union. And on top of this, club membership fees, which for some clubs exceed £100. UBWFC's membership currently costs £20, and we strongly believe that to ask more will exclude people from playing sport, and reduce the diversity of our members. Please donate and help us to make sure that people of all backgrounds and abilities get the opportunity to play football at university.

Oh yeah, and if we reach £1000 we'll post the videos of us getting electrocuted.
