Maria's College Fund

Recently my dearest friend,  Maria Guadlupé Duran Sanchez, who attends Iowa State University came to me and explained how she is unable to afford her tuition for this last semester, therefore is unable to enroll in classes for next semester. This has left my friend in a situation where she owes the university about $2,000 in a week or else she will be unable to accomplish a dream that people told her she would never be able-- graduate college.

In 2008, Maria moved to the states to chase the "American Dream" with her family. Maria is from a little town called Colonia Gervacio Mendoza, Guanajuato Mexico where education is not as accessible as it is in the states. Maria has always valued school and understood the importance of education. Throughout her life people told her that she would never graduate high school and she proved them wrong in 2018. Below is a photo of Maria alongside myself and some of our friends.
During high school Maria was a busy student that took her studies incredibly serious. Not to mention, she was our class president senior year of high school. Maria was also part of many clubs including GLI, a group focused on educating others about the oppression that women face internationally; she even started her own club called "Latinos Unidos" which served as a safe-space for Latinx and hispanic students. During her high school career she also spoke at public forums throughout the city advocating for social issues like DACA and March For Our Lives. Below is a picture of Maria and I at a March For Our Lives event.

Since attending the Iowa State University, nothing has changed and Maria is still one of the hardest working people I have the privilege of knowing. She recently started up a blog that tells the stories of Latinx identifying womxn in Iowa on Instagram (@floreciendoeniowa). She is currently majoring in global resource systems and plans on using that knowledge  to aid her with giving back to the communities in Central America. Also, part of what Maria wants to do with her life is spend her time helping Latinx students in the states and internationally with obtaining the education they deserve.
