Feed Our Community's Hungry

Our Neighbors Should Not Go Hungry.

In a country where we throw away billions of pounds of food each year, it is shocking that anyone in America goes hungry. Yet, In 2015, 42.2 million Americans live in households considered food insecure.  This includes 13.1 million children.   It becomes even more unsettling as you consider that in New England, one of the richest corners of the country, countless children go to bed hungry each night.   Maine, CT, RI and Vermont all have about 20% of their children going to bed each hungry. In Mass, CT, and NH that number is about 16%.    That cannot be acceptable.

In New Hampshire alone, 1 in 9 people struggles with hunger.  103K people receive help from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) the US’ nutritional assistance safety net.   8% of NH households receive help.    Although there are these safety nets in our country, on average they afford $7.64 in help, per household, per day, on average.

With continued cuts to public assistance and nutritional programs, local groups have been asked to do more with less.    Joan’s Pantry is our communities response to hunger in this country.   Located in the basement of Asbury Church in Chesterfield New Hampshire, deep in the heart of Pat’s Nation, the Pantry has become a community food pantry, which serves meals and supplements food to 10,000 families per year.

As we become more familiar we the scope of the challenge before us, more and more of the community is stepping up.   Each week Food and volunteers are provided by an assortment of local non-profits, corporations, and concerned neighbors.   We restrict no one from the door, and require no need verification to receive assistance.    Despite the uphill battle before us, together we work to help in ways that extend well past food, and pray that we can make a difference one person at a time.

We cannot survive without the extended community’s help.  Support our hungry neighbors and Joan's Pantry
