Double Not Half: multicultural book
Donation protected
Double! Not Half. is a slightly fictionalized account of several conversations I had with both my children and my students while teaching English in Japan. All too often, people of mixed races and cultures are referred to as "half," a term which fails to take into account the tremendous beauty and sophistication that accompanies those who "walk in two worlds".
By emphasizing the positive aspects of speaking TWO languages and having TWO cultures, Double! Not Half. aims to increase the reader's understanding of diversity and its benefits with a beautifully simple message of inclusion and appreciation for the value and potential that lies within every human being.
Rod Gottula wrote the story Double! Not Half. in the summer of 2017 and spent the next several months looking into publishing options and illustrators, ultimately deciding upon illustrator, Arthur Lin, whose soft watercolors give both life and authenticity to the cultural components of the story.
