I’m Toni Sisti and I’d never thought I’d find myself writing one of these pages. A couple years ago my mother made the courageous decision to undergo major back and neck surgery to finally free herself from her lifelong burden of debilitating pain. While undergoing post operative rehabilitation she found herself getting weaker instead of stronger. Very rapidly she lost the ability grasp objects without dropping them, hold a pen to write her name, button her shirt buttons, which all seemed strange but correctable. Shortly after that her ability walk, swallow, and speak clearly (nearly all of her gross and fine motor skills) became severly compromised. The stress from the long hours of being under anesthesia for her surgeries is believed to have triggered A.L.S. (Lou Gehrig’s disease) in my mom.
For those of you who do not know, ALS is a rare disease that causes nerves cells to break down, which reduces functionality of the muscles. Eventually the disease attacks the respiratory muscles resulting in having to be put on a permanent ventilator. There is no cure for A.L.S. and this horrible disease will eventually claim my mother’s life. Her ALS has already progressed to the point where she is no longer capable of walking, feeding and bathing herself, or speaking clearly. She requires round the clock assistance as she is no longer capable of going to the bathroom, turning herself in bed, and even the very simplest activities that you and I take for granted.
It devastates me to watch my dad, who has been putting his life on the line protecting others for over 20 years as a decorated Paterson detective, struggle and find himself helpless to save his wife of over a quarter century. My family has gone from a two income household to only one income with triple the bills. We need help to the tune of $60,000 to ease the enormous financial burden put on my parents.
The money will be allocated to the following:
- Remodeling the bathroom to make it handicap accessible including walk in bath tub to we can assist her in.
- A home health aid to assist in caring for my mother.
- Physical Therapist to slow down the muscular atrophy.
- Medical expenses including medicines which are no longer covered by my dad’s insurance.
- Medical equipment such as a lift to get her out of bed easily and with less pain, as well as an electric power seated stair lift to get her out of the house in order to bring her to medical appointments.
We call on friends, family, and all kind souls to help ease the financial burden that has befell my parents, so my mother can put all her efforts into staying as strong as possible with the time she has left.
